Who cares if someone scored 6 goals against a team that only won one or two games an entire year? How did they fare against the best teams in the league, or how did they fare against OOC teams?

I guess I don't really know what you're getting at. There wasn't any campaign or even mention of Trevor winning this award until today. It doesn't seem like anyone "talked" the other teams into voting for him. I hate that UNT has to defend themselves everytime one of their players wins an award. Last year it wasn't even the MVP, it was that they had too many players on the all-lsa team. Again, I don't know anything about the top players this year, but I know the league voted for Trevor.

UNT didn't do anything to persuade the voters. In fact, they had nothing to do with the results. So I guess what you meant to say was:

its hard to vote on players strictly on the statistics that MCLA has posted. one player could have a few more points than the other. but the other may have fewer turnovers or play smarter ball. alot of the teams in the lsa vote on players based on stats because they havent seen some of them play. trevor, neil, ernst and others each deserve MVP, but trevor played great games back to back in order to get his team in the playoffs. i think that may have been a deciding factor in the decision. also, staying healthy and dealing with injuries comes with the title of MVP.

Instead of talking about who you think should have received what award, why don't we congratulate those players that did receive awards?

I for one think that Matt Malcolm had an outstanding year and should be complemented on his play.

I also think that Dustin Andrews played an incredible rookie year for us, his presence on D was very well noted. I even overheard a coach in one of our games say how talented he was to some of his attackmen.

I think that all of these players on the all LSA list deserve the awards that they have received. They have all worked hard, now lets give them some positive recognition for it.

Craig is right. Look at the run UNT had to close out the season. The kid deserved the award, without a doubt.

I also haven't had the privledge of seeing many games this year, so it's tough for me to speculate. I know Trevor is a solid attackman, and Warf from Baylor is pretty good. Other than those 2, I can't say that I've seen any of the other players that you mentioned.

Don't coaches and players vote for this? And wasn't Trevor a 1st team all conference player last season? I'm really not sure so I could be wrong. If he was, then I wouldn't say he's a guy no one has ever heard of.
Again, I'm way too far removed from the game to speculate on this years voting.

If you're too far removed then why are you speculating? Also what players do you know that vote for MVP? Maybe you're too far removed to comment on this topic?

Players

Several teams turned in ballots where the person that cast the ballot was a player.

The division A all LSA honors are very flawed. Yes, stats are a key part of the game, but one person could play on a very less talented team and rack up 6 goals and 4 assists every game because the players around him are not nearly up to his skill level. Coaches must start to go around the league and watch these games and notice the different players and see how well they play within their teams. For instance, I watched SMU play vs UNT two thursdays ago. All of those players play together as a team and they play off each other. The attack is phenominal at feeding each other and shooting(#8 and 22), the middies can play both offense and defense (#15,4, 14), and the defense is very solid and play team defense and slide very well (#5 and 30). The same goes with Texas who I watched play the other day as well, the attack were very solid #35 and 9, and the middies played great as well, and the defensemen were extremely solid #38 and 3 i think.

what is your point?

most of the players that made the teams, played this past weekend.

exception: baylor, SMU, and tech....which were competitive teams also.

Ballot system flaws

Postby Karl Lynch on Mon Apr 30, 2007 5:11 pm

We have used the same ballot system for years now. Incidentally, it is closely mirrored to the ballot system used by the MCLA to pick All-Americans. Every coach and every team knows that they are responsible for researching the players and voting accordingly.

I think the voters do a very good job of identifying the best players in the LSA. When I see a guy like Drew from LSU make the team, I know that the voters are trying to pick the best. Drew had a great year and the coaches noticed.

Now, whether a first team middie is better than a second team middie is always up for debate.

To keep the debate going, I offer the following:

Number of Players from Each School.
UT = 7
A&M = 5
SMU = 5
BU = 4
TSU = 3
UNT = 3
TTU = 2
LSU = 1

Position of the Top Four Teams at the End of the Year

#1 A&M
#2 UT
#3 UNT
#4 TSU

While that may be true, it is just not possible for people voting on these awards to go on anything else except for stats. You cannot expect a voter from LSU to catch Texas Tech games. You cannot expect Oklahoma voters to watch a good amount of Texas A&M games. Trust me, teams that are well rounded and have multiple players capable of putting up insane numbers, but instead spread the scoring and work together as a team are not looking to have players win individual awards. They are nice, but they mean nothing. It's all about going to the dance as they say. Go through the teams and count how many players put 10 or more points on every team. That will tell you where the players are at. Texas A&M has at least twelve I think, which will make them a tough cover at nationals.

Players that scored 10+ points broekn down by team & how many of them were seniors
Baylor: 6 (2 seniors)
OK State: 0 (by defalt, no stats reported)
SMU: 12 (1 senior)
Texas Tech: 6 (1 senior)
UNT: 9 (1 senior)
Oklahoma: 5 (0 seniors)
Texas: 7 (0 seniors)
LSU: 2 (0 seniors)
Rice: 1 (0 seniors)
Texas A&M: 11 (2 seniors)
Texas State: 6 (1 senior)
Tulane: 2 (1 senior)

What is more potent & tougher to cover. An offense with one stud player putting up redic numbers (that still deserves to be rewarded by all means) or an offense that has multiple players capable of being the stud, but spreads the scoring. The second option does not win the individual awards on offense, but I garuntee that team will have more success.

I like to see a team that spreads the wealth among the players when it comes to scoring because it is exciting to see how a defense would have to figure out how to contain another team's scoring potency.

I saw that kind in the four teams last Saturday- TAMU, UT, UNT, and TSU.

The game between Baylor and SMU way back earlier this year demonstrated that scoring wealth.

I have not seen Southwestern play, but I'm sure they are the same, too except for seeing them at the fall ball in College Station last fall.
