As far as the consolidation of media in the country and world - I don't think that's a good thing. While they nominally may be separately run divisions, at some point, higher up, that org chart will come together - nad that's where the real power lies. There is also the comment that "stuff flows downhill". Synergies can easily become collusions and/or censorship.

And that is the beauty of the free press in the good ole US of A. I can flip the channel or pick up a different newspaper or hit a different web site - if I don't like what I'm seeing.

I don't understand what O'Reilly has to do with it anyway. I do enjoy that in the eyes of some, FoxNews is a propoganda machine run by the evil conservative mastermind Rupert Murdoch while CNN is a beacon of truth owned by the benevolent Ted Turner because of his strong sense of moral obigation to deliver the news to the masses. Rather idiotic, no?

To me, OJ Simpson is a striking example of what is going wrong in our country. We live in a place where a man can murder two people and then be found not guilty as a result of his wealth, the incompetence of the prosecutor, the slander of a police officer, the deviousness of his defense attorney, and the fear of violence a guilty verdict might bring. No one should give that murderer a moment of their time by either watching the interview or reading his book.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the prosecuter was incompetant...they proved endlessly how guilty he was. I blame the jury. And I cant get over the fact that there was a threat of rioting over the verdict -> "He didnt commit a crime and murder those people...let's cause violence!".

I'm all for free will. But there is a slight difference - RW was under a multi-year contract and he abandoned his team (the Dolphins) on the edge of training camp (after the draft).

And the most important thing...the kids. Kids idolize sports players as heroes. Imagine all of the young kids in America that were Ricky Williams fans...turning on Sportscenter one day to see their hero breaking tackles and scoring touchdowns...only to find he ditched out of his team to do something the child's parents have claimed to be bad (drugs). When you sign a pro sports contract you realize what kind of attention/effect you have upon millions of people. Way to go Ricky, you are worthless and a terrible role model.

But the point is, with increased consolidation, it's what you DON't see that is important, as companies may practice self-censorship - and the options for other sources of information decrease. The web is certainly one option, but it can also be a source of unvetted information - fact-checking standards may not be as high as with "traditional" media.

Fox News firebrand Bill O'Reilly threatened yesterday to whack Rupert Murdoch in the wallet for promoting O.J. Simpson's how-I-murdered-my-wife book.
Vowing to boycott any company that advertises on Fox's two-part special hyping O.J.'s "If I Did It," O'Reilly declared: "If every American walked away from the O.J. garbage, it wouldn't happen."

The web is certainly one option, but it can also be a source of unvetted information - fact-checking standards may not be as high as with "traditional" media.

I think I will take the new media's "fact checking"/distribution methods over the days of old when 3 news anchors were the gate-keepers of news information. And that is not even considering when the so-called traditional media use fake or forged documents/photographs to make their case.

O.J. Simpson Book, TV Special Canceled:

After a firestorm of criticism, News. Corp. said Monday that it has canceled the O.J. Simpson book and television special "If I Did It."

"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project," said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman. "We are sorry for any pain that his has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson."

A dozen Fox affiliates had already said they would not air the two- part sweeps month special, planned for next week before the Nov. 30 publication of the book by ReganBooks. The publishing house is a HarperCollins imprint owned _ like the Fox network _ by News Corp.
