In other words, Hopkins being a DIII school and DI in lacrosse proved that there should be exceptions.

The flip side of the arguement is that you have basically Div. 3 schools & athletic departments benefitting from one successfully (financially) Div. 1 program. This applies to Hopkins (Div 1 lacrossse, rest of sports are Div 3), Colarado College (Div. 1 hockey, Div. 3 in all other sports), etc. This rule applied to Georgetown at one time, if I recall correctly when they had Div. 1 basketball and all other sports were Div. 3.

Is it fair for the Div. 3 schools competiting against these programs in all the other sports when they don't have access to the same resources at the non Div. 1 varsity level?

In my opinion it is fair. At least at Hopkins, the other programs didn't see a lot of benefit from one DI program. I can't speak in reference to the other schools that where involved in this scenario. I guess it would depend if the solitary DI program had such an impact that it was able to increase the level of support (financial, facilities, extra $$ for additional coaches, etc) to the organizations operating at the DIII level. There would have to be some type of large trickle down effect. Indirectly we see this at almost every large institution.

(Hypothetical situation) Large university supporter donates money to the football team for a new weight room. Subsequently, other teams/students are benefiting from the football team.

I know it was a joke-but to Coach Pal, what if someone wrote a big check to a school with the specific intent to help a lax team go varsity (hah..... FSU...chooo!-just kiddin). How does that work with Title IX rules? Can they git that money with that intent and not have it count against Title IX rules, a sort of varsity lax squad endowment.

No. Title IX would still apply. Assuming a school was already in compliance, they would have to either an equal number of roster spots from other men's sports to make room, or add an equal number of roster spots to women's sports to even the ratio back out.

Urick came to Georgetown after spending ten years as the head coach at Hobart College. During his tenure at Hobart, Urick amassed a 122-30 record and won ten consecutive NCAA Division III titles.

Urick moves to Georgetown, and they become a very much improved D1 school - what a surprise! (What was also suprising is that he is entering his 16th year with the Hoyas. I remember when he signed on there - it was a pretty big deal).

Yeah. I was in grad school in D.C. at the time and thought Georgetown was very lucky and Hobart not. Hobart did win three more DIII titles after Urick left, before moving up to DI
