USC also won the coaches poll but they were contractually obligated to vote with the BCS. Auburn has no stake. They were not voted #1 by anyone.

I believe that if you give USC a share of the National Title in 2003 I think that Auburn should also have a share in 04. If only Auburn would've cried a bit more and had an easier schedule they would've gotten their share.

there are other publications that name their own national champions i remember seeing a site with them once. some of the picks were very strange

Not true. USC was better than both of those teams. LSU got their 1/2 championship handed to them by the media. Auburn never got their chance. Both situations were due to BCS (Big Crock o' S...). USC was the better team in both cases, IMHO.
