PNCLL Week #10 (4/6- 4/12) - Predict, Scores & Discuss

Postby TheNino57 on Mon Apr 11, 2005 9:15 am

Just from the looks of these teams, it should be a very interesting playoff year. It seems that any of these teams could get hot and run away with it.

I disagree. I have been able to play against every team in the B playoffs, some teams more than once. I think that two of the teams getting in will most likely get stomped on. I don't see anyone pulling the upset on Linfield in the semi and the same goes with Montana. Montana is my pick to win it all this year- nothing against Linfield, they are a great team too. And since these two haven't played this season, it all comes down to a judgement call. And as they say, defense wins championships; Montana's poles are fast, brutal, and smart- they won't get beat by any tricky stuff. Your going to see Linfield's dizzyingly fast offense against Montana's junkyard-dog defense- this will be a fun one to watch...

--Congrats to all the teams that are moving on to the post season--

Final Score:
LC - 6
SOU - 5

This was by far the best and closest game PIOLax has played thus far this season. This game also marks the first game that this extremely young team (15 out of about 26 are freshmen and 10 with no lax experience) actually played as a team. I have to give props to my goalkeeper (Rafi Cuevas) and the rest of my defense for shutting down a 3 minute stick penalty, most of which we spent 2 or 3 man down. Rafi came up with lots of great 1 on 1 saves and the slides by the man-down defense were right on.

Thanks to SOU for the great game. It is really wonderful to have you guys in the PNCLL. Good luck in the rest of the season. All of us are looking forward to the Western - PIOLax rematch. The game will be a battle!

This isnt supposed to sound whiny but LC has 26 guys and 16 have played before, id give my right arm for that many people, let alone that many who have played. As of right now we are at fourteen guys, and four of us have played lax b4 this season.

I'm with WouMiddie on this one, we have six players currently on the team who have played lax in high school and three of those are freshmen, another come on to the team a couple of weeks ago and has been away from the game a few years. most of the experience on our team comes from last season when the majority of the guys on our program played their first games. This season we also have a bunch of new guys that have never played before. We boast an 18 player roster but three players aren't healthy.

In an effort to clarify my earlier posting…

I understand that not every PNCLL team is as deep as LC and that all teams have varying levels of experienced players. I was not trying to sound as though numbers and experienced players are negative aspects to have on a lacrosse team. But, as in LC’s position, it can cause some problems.

Many problems occur when there is a significant gap between the experienced players and the new recruits. In this situation, many times the experienced players become frustrated with the less experienced and either quit the team or become apathetic and simply tries to play the game without involving their less experienced teammates. Another problem occurs when instead of the less experienced playing-up to the more experienced level of play, the more experienced play down. Either way, these problems make it increasingly difficult to play as a team with everyone contributing, instead of a group of men depending on a few select individuals to win the game for them.

Over a couple of beers before the season started, my captains and I discussed what our goals for the season should be. The top three were: 1) Have Fun; 2) Teach lacrosse to each other and learn from each other; and 3) Become a team. I believe these three goals are the most important that any team could have. Winning must come after these goals. I believe that we have met our first three goals.

Once again, I am not trying to make it seem as though I am unhappy with my players’ performance nor would I want the team any other way. Please don’t take my above comments as some kind of excuse for our present record, it is not. The only reason I stated my earlier comment in question was because I am extremely proud of my players and how far we have come in the past few months.

Andrew, your original posting didn't come off the way you think it may have- I didn't think that you sounded like a complainer at all, I was just trying to give you a little bit of grief about the fact that your team has the numbers that some of us can only dream of having... Don't feel like you offended anyone.

That's how things started at OSU also... When I got there as a freshman in 2000, myself and four other guys had played in high school, the rest of the guys started playing when they got to OSU. Now, everyone on the team has some prior experience. In our case things are a little diffrent just because the pool of people at our school is greater to pull from (and we are a public school). I think the numbers will come. Lacrosse is growing so rapidly in northwest highschools that it is just a matter of time before the wealth is shared among all the PNCLL.

Everyone has the same problem, or has had the same in the past. Oregon, UW, PLU, CWU, Montana, Whitman, everyone has had to deal with it at some point. Oregon and PLU used to battle games out in 2OT. Overall, it's good to hear you've come together as a team, and met your goals. As Josh said, when HS lax keeps growing, everyone will have more incoming talent, they won't have to produce it.

Absolutely correct. This is the very first season where the Huskies don't have a single "rookie" on our roster, playing lacrosse for their first time. We always have had at least 3-4 every season before this.

The other factor, besides getting good high school players as incoming Freshmen, is to assemble a good coaching staff. I can't remember when the last time was we had a champion in our league that did NOT have a dedicated and competent Head Coach on the sidelines. There are still some of our teams without a coach, and rumor has it at least one or two have no real desire to get one, thinking they can coach themselves just as well. This reminds me of the old axiom that a lawyer who represents himself when on trial has a fool for a client.

 It now occurs to me that our opponents this week, Gonzaga, might take my post above as a dig on them and Rick taking over as Head Coach. Truthfully guys, I hadn't even thought of that situation because I know the Zags organization is well-run with adult non-playing coaches involved with helping to run the team.

I'm talking about some infamous others in our league, you know who you are and so do the rest of us. Wazzou was probably the worst offender in recent years, and if that program is revived (let's hope!) next year or in the future it will be with a real coach or coaches. But the Cougs were not alone.

Don't know if this is the correct thread to continue this thought process but...

Did the league not make it necessary to have a coach at the Fall Meetings this year? I had heard talk but did not know.

Willamette had an especially bad experience in which our coach last year was revealed to be some sort of criminal/felon/thief/bum and was spending his nights sleeping in the computer labs on campus between days with practice. This all before being caught stealing coffee and food from the campus cafe thing. After caught his resume was discovered to have a conspicuous 20 year gap from 1975-1995. Oops  If it wasn't Willamette, I wouldn't believe it.

Coaches are great, but finding a good one is hard, as we've found.

Yeah, finding a Coach can be hard, but now you have this great story to tell- sorry for finding amusement in your hardship, but that's kind of funny.
