This season we also have a bunch of new guys that have never played before. We boast an 18 player roster but three players aren't healthy.
In an effort to clarify my earlier posting…
I understand that not every PNCLL team is as deep as LC and that all teams have varying levels of experienced players. I was not trying to sound as though numbers and experienced players are negative aspects to have on a lacrosse team. But, as in LC’s position, it can cause some problems.
Many problems occur when there is a significant gap between the experienced players and the new recruits. In this situation, many times the experienced players become frustrated with the less experienced and either quit the team or become apathetic and simply tries to play the game without involving their less experienced teammates. Another problem occurs when instead of the less experienced playing-up to the more experienced level of play, the more experienced play down. Either way, these problems make it increasingly difficult to play as a team with everyone contributing, instead of a group of men depending on a few select individuals to win the game for them.
Over a couple of beers before the season started, my captains and I discussed what our goals for the season should be. The top three were: 1) Have Fun; 2) Teach lacrosse to each other and learn from each other; and 3) Become a team. I believe these three goals are the most important that any team could have. Winning must come after these goals. I believe that we have met our first three goals.
Once again, I am not trying to make it seem as though I am unhappy with my players’ performance nor would I want the team any other way. Please don’t take my above comments as some kind of excuse for our present record, it is not. The only reason I stated my earlier comment in question was because I am extremely proud of my players and how far we have come in the past few months.
