Double Duty....

With MCLA in full swing, I wanted to see if there were other coaches that pull double duty out there....how you handle the juggling, and the constant film sessions, etc.

Double Duty - refers to coaching other teams and programs - HS, MS, Youth...durring the same time as your MCLA season. - or if you dont do both, I would just like to know how many are involved with non MCLA programs.

I thought it would be nice to know who else is out there helping contribute to the growth of the sport at all coaching levels (yes we know the officals do both already - so you guys already get a pat on the back!!!!!)

I figured this could also be used a resource between coaches at HS, MS, Youth programs across the country, or even to set up a trip possiblity. We go on a trip every spring to NC, but I personally might want to head to CA, or even OR next year....

Plus, if any of us would like to trade some apparel, this is a great place to start!!! * In which I still owe D. Hogan a pair of shorts...I didnt forget!!!

Unfortunately it has gotten harder to pull double duty in Minnesota. The MSHSL has had a problem with over scheduling early in the year. I remember last year having a game at Blake where we were not sure which officials were going to make the JV game. We knew one guy had a game near Blake. However the other referees were a little further away. One referee was coming from Northwest of the cities, and I was coming from a game at Stout.

I'm assisting Missoula's first high school team with former Griz Jamie Pyke. They will play their first game ever on Saturday and are having a great time. I only have to be there for an hour, 2 days per week, before our practices with the college... so it's not so bad. I also work with a team trying to get going up on the Flathead Reservation on Sunday's when I'm in town and during the summer.

If any teams are ever interested in coming to Montana for some games (maybe on their way to Oregon) let me know.

I'd also really enjoy some discussion here from other MCLA coaches who work with high schoolers. How do you balance time? Our high school lacrosse here is so basic that it doesn't take a ton of thought or time to put together practices, but I imagine for better programs the work is tough to balance (and is something I should maybe prepare for...). Anybody getting paid for both high school and college? How about coaching and reffing?

Besides Head Coach of Fort Lewis College (www.fortlax.org) I serve as the RMLC President and over see Durango's youth and Highschool lacrosse programs. I started 3rd-5th grade and 6th-8th grade lacrosse programs in 2002. I started the highschool program in 2005 (www.durangolacrosse.com), serving as the head coach in 05 and 06. Currently my former HS assistant coach and former FLC team captain Jed Gilden is the Head coach. I am working with a recent CSU graduate on getting a Highschool girls program off the ground for this year. In 2006-2007 I was working with USLacrosse on their Strategic Planning Committee. Just finished as assistant coach for my sons squirt hockey team. The season was September through March and we finished 30-2-2 and took 2nd place in the state. It is all a labor of Love! The wife also plays competitive travel hockey (www.durangobetties.com) so she is pretty understanding about the amount of time lacrosse and hockey takes.

This is the second year that I have coached a high school team in addition to Creighton University. It can be tough to find the right balance, but I find doing both especially rewarding. Coaching high school and college teams are completely different experiences. The frustrations, challenges and rewards are different, and that makes me a better coach. At least I tell myself it does.

Neither team wants to practice 5 days a week (even though I wish they did) so I can stagger the practice schedule with only a few doubles each week. My big problem is on game days. Both teams play the majority of their games on weekends. When possible, I schedule the high school games around the Creighton games. Some opponents understand my situation and cooperate with rescheduling. Sometimes I just have to miss the high school games and rely on my assistants.

Neither team pays me. I doubt that I will allow this financial arrangement to continue next year.

I am not an MCLA coach, but i am player for Grove City in Division 2 of the CCLA. One of my teamates and I also coach 3 days per week with a youth program in Pittsburgh (Seneca Valley 5th and 6th graders). Lacrosse is really growing in Western PA.
