Minnesota High School Hockey Tourney

Postby Pinball on Mon Mar 03, 2008 1:05 pm

Personally it is one of my favorite times of the year, there is nothing like 18,000 people at the X watching high school hockey. Not sure how many non-minnesota people out there know how big and awesome this tourney is. I was at the sectional AA finals and it was tough to find a seat.

CLASS AA TOURNEY

#2 Edina (25-2)
Cloquet (15-11-2)

#3 Benilde-St M (25-3)
Woodbury (22-6)

#1 Roseau (27-0)
Blaine (19-8)

#4 Hill-Murray (24-3-1)
Lakeville So. (14-11-3)

CLASS A TOURNEY

#2 Dul Marshall (21-5)
Mankato West (25-2)

#3 Warroad (22-6)
Litchfield (11-14-2)

#1 St Thomas (23-5)
Little Falls (24-3)

#4 Cathedral (22-4-1)
Blake (19-8-1)

My Picks-

Rd1

Edina over Cloquet
Woodbury over BSM
Roseau over Blaine
Hill over Lakeville South

Rd 2

Edina over Woodbury
Roseau over Hill in OT

Championship.
Edina over Roseau 6-5

Edina is just too good, with the stacked Super Juniors of Buddish (u of m), Everson (harvard), Connor Gaardner and Anders Lee. I grew up hating the Cake Eaters, but for some reason now they are fun to cheer for.

A -

Rd1-
Dul Marshall over Mankato West
Warroad over Litchfield
Little Falls over STA
Blake over Cathedral

Rd2-
Warroad over Marshall
Blake over Little Falls

Champ
Blake over Warroad 4-2

Roseau is a solid pick though, as Aaron Ness is probably one of the more dynamic players in the state who SHOULD earn Mr. Hockey honors

It is this sport where a bunch of guys move around on a sheet of ice and try to put the ball (think really badly burned biscuit) in to this goal. I think the Dallas Stars play it. In fact they used to play games in Minnesota. My small swipe at Minnesota for the day.

In all honesty the state hockey tournament is fun to watch. I am not sure if it compares to Indiana basketball or Texas football, but it is a great tournament.

Oh it compares alright....Its right up there....you cant compare it to Texas HS football, or Indiana BB - but you could say premier State HS tourneys....Football - Texas or Ohio, BB - Indiana (which I think its new york personally - you play in the garden) Hockey - MN

Its the biggest, most entertaining tournament in the state according to every one that has lived here their whole life...

I remeber watching my first state HS tourney in the basement of Muzzy's house after a game in Stillwater Dome in the middle of a snow storm...that year I was watching some pimple faced left winger help lead Holy Angels to a title...some kid named Ryan Hurley????

Jon...you will soon learn, and Im warning you now....you are only allowed to take Blake in the A tourney, please amend your selections....

Birkholtz is probaly the best player in the state...and if he's on, good luck...

Im taking BSM in the AA tourney...I still know a lot of those kids - and they just dont lose in State Tourneys , plus, they've beaten everyone in the AA tourney except for Rosseau (whom they havent played....)

Wow...im shocked Pete didnt take Roseville....they arent even in it, but he usually still takes them...

Yeah, watching the Winged Beavers of Avon Old Farms School defeat the mighty Pelicans of St. Paul's School for the New England Championship is not nearly the same. Something about wearing a tweed jacket with elbow patches at a hockey game just feels so wrong...

St. Paul's, not to be outdone, managed to win the endowment battle with their 432 million easily defeating Avon Old Farms pithy 80 million.

Cheers,

Hornets always seem to struggle out of the gates, the few games I caught on TV looks like they have all the talent in the world.

Roseau just makes me wish we would do away with the 2 tiered tourney and turn it back to 1 tourney. Thats great that they chose to play up and still rock, I saw the special on Channel 11 last night and the entire population of the city is less than EP's highschool. But the HS athletes are looked up to by the kids in town like they are pro's.

Here is the story and the video if you click the video link.

I would say it is far and away the best prep sports tourney in the country in terms of atmosphere, but then again I am from MN. Nothing compares in my mind to the reaction of student fans in a sold out 18,000 person arena when a goal is scored, true elation.

my office doesnt have it on anywhere, but I did find a way to stream it....darned top secret secured facilities...

Last night was the first time Ive ever actually WENT to the tourney.....

It was a great atmosphere for the STA v. Little Falls game....and the place was packed...

To bad my Bears couldnt get it done...they just looked sluggish and just happy to be there...
