Next thing you know.... We will need a rule where every player gets a CapriSun after the game.

Can we make sure everyone gets a nice trophy at the end of the year? And then maybe ice cream afterwards.

In the PNCLL we use conference record, then head-to-head, then goal differential -- but only in games between teams tied for any playoff spot.

Last season, for instance, Oregon State, Boise State and Washington all wound up tied in the DI standings at 3-3 after completion of the regular season. OSU had beaten UW 18-13; UW beat BSU 12-11 and BSU beat OSU 11-10. Based on goal differential between the three tied teams, Oregon State was the #3 playoff seed with a goal differential of +4; Boise State earned the 4th and final playoff spot with a goal differential of 0, and the Huskies were eliminated from the post-season and finished for the year with a goal differential of -4.

A blow-out win over a non-playoff team would have no bearing whatsoever on the standings -- provided one of the first three tie-breakers resolves a tie between three or more teams. Only if needed would goals against common opponents -- a 4th tie-breaker -- be used, which is followed by LaxPower rankings. These final two tie-breakers have never been needed to resolve a tie, and were only included by the Executive Board as slightly better options than flipping a coin or using "paper/rock/scissors".

If this season Western Washington winds up in a tie with Willamette that involves at least one other team, then it is possible that this 25-goal margin of victory could have a bearing on playoff seeding. But given that Willamette is 1-24 in conference play since 2004 while Western Washington is 18-7 during that same time period, this would seem to be an unlikely scenario for 2008.

It was discussed and voted on, Danny. There were pros and cons for both methods. You would have to poll each member of the EB back in 2001 or '02 when we instituted this tie-breaker system why they voted as they did, but nobody has complained. My own team has lost out twice on this tie-breaker in the past five seasons, and we are not complaining. Had goals against been used, instead, UW still would have been the "odd man out" in 2007.

Exactly....and beating a team 10-0 says more about your defense than beating a team 20-10.
