Jason Childs named Presbyterian College's Men's Lax Coach

JASON CHILDS NAMED PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE’S MEN’S LACROSSE COACH


CLINTON, S.C. — Jason Childs, a 2001 graduate of Dickinson College, has been named head coach of the men’s lacrosse team announced today by Director of Athletics, Dr. William B. “Bee ”Carlton.


Childs, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, comes to the Blue Hose from nearby Limestone College in Gaffney, SC. During his tenure with the Saints, he served as the men’s lacrosse program’s assistant coach while helping lead the program to a two-year mark of 24-2-0, one Deep South Conference title (2004), and a runner-up finish for the NCAA Division II National championship. The team is currently 5-0-0 on the season and ranked #2 in the nation. He also served as the school’s men’s and women’s cross country coach during the 2004 season.


“I am very excited about the opportunity to coach lacrosse at Presbyterian College,” said Childs. “It is a very exciting time for the PC Lacrosse program, and I am looking forward to the challenge of building a program. The administration has shown that they want to have a successful lacrosse program, and have built a solid foundation for the future. The PC athletic program has such a strong tradition, and I just hope to add to that reputation. I would like to thank Dr. Carlton and Dr. Griffith for giving me a chance to prove myself here at PC. The future of the program looks very promising, and I am very excited to be apart of it.”


Childs will take over the development of the institution’s first men’s lacrosse program. He replaces Pat Lynch to resigned earlier this month. The school announced plans to add men’s and women’s lacrosse to its athletic program beginning with the 2004-05 academic year in early November. Both teams will compete at the club level during the 2004-05 season and will become varsity sports for the 2005-06 season. The addition of the two lacrosse teams will give PC 15 total varsity teams in 10 sports.


“Coach Jason Childs is a wonderful addition to our staff,” said Carlton. “He brings both a strong academic and lacrosse background to PC. He will be able to continue to build our young lacrosse program into one that will be exceptionally competitive. He knows what it takes to be competitive at the national-championship level. He knows the type of student-athlete PC needs to recruit and will be exceptionally capable of attracting the best possible young men to our new team. In our meetings I was immediately impressed with Jason’s friendly personality and conscientious approach to coaching. He and his wife Mary will be a great addition to our campus and to Clinton.”


Childs came to Limestone College from the Darlington School (Rome, Georgia) where he served as Offensive Coordinator for the lacrosse team from 2001-2003. While at Darlington, Childs taught American and British Literature while serving as a Resident Faculty Member. He also gained valuable experience while acting as the Defensive Coordinator for the basketball team, as well as serving as an assistant coach for the middle school football team.


He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 2001 while performing as a four-year starter at Attack and Midfield for the Dickinson Lacrosse team. He was a two-time captain and won the Unsung Hero Award in 1999. Childs set a school and Centennial Conference record for assists in a game with 12 (2001). He also ranks third in career assists, seventh in all-time scoring at Dickinson, and second in single game scoring (13). Before entering Dickinson, Childs graduated from St. Paul’s School For Boys in Baltimore, where he played varsity soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.
