Richard Zednik's throat

Postby Dr. Jason Stockton on Mon Feb 11, 2008 6:27 pm

I must say that was one of the scariest injuries I've ever seen. I guess he left a 100 foot trail of blood leaving the ice. . .they've also said if he hadn't skated off on his own he probably wouldn't have survived. . .unbelievable.

Do you think it was a good idea to finish the game? Not a big shocker that Buffalo scored about 2 minutes after the restart.

Back in the late 80's, Clint Malarchuk, the Sabres goalie, had his jugular cut by a skate. He received medical attention in the crease and also survived.

I read that the blade was close to Zednik's jugular vein but barely missed it.

I unfortunately saw that video last night. It was pretty nasty.

Jason...minor correction but none the less, Buffalo scored with a little over a minute to go in the game on a power play that would have lasted the remainder of the game. At that time they were already up by 1 and the Win was sealed.

I was watching the game last night (as I work for the Panthers and am originally from Western NY) and must say it was quite shocking at first as you just don't think about that type of thing happening even though its a reality that it could happen at any moment.

I don't think they should have finished the game, they should have just given Buffalo the W...if you read the papers, both sides said they really didn't play 100% after that as their mind was on Zednik. Luckily it looks like Zednik will recover fully.

on ESPN.com they showed the interview of the vascular surgeon that performed the surgery and she said the carotid was basically hanging by a thread but that saved his life because they were able to find it pretty easily, grabv it and re-attach it. If it had been completely severed, it wouldve retracted so far into the throat that they wouldve had a hard time finding the artery, thus taking longer to complete the surgery and more blood loss and....you get the picture.
peace.

Coincidentally, Malarchuk was injured vs. the Blues in a game played at the old Aud... in Buffalo.

Benson, that has got to be the best hummell figurine I have ever seen. From what I heard on ESPN OTL, word was gotten to both coaches and the officials that Zednik was in stable condition before they restarted the game. I think they did the right thing, I have not heard any members of either team say they wanted to stop the game.

Olli Jokinen (the one whos skate cut Zednik and team captain) said he didn't think they should have finished. And Lindy Ruff said he would have been fine if they would have not finished the game.
