the Dordt games should be interesting, but I don't find myself jumping in a car at 10pm to Northfield just to watch. Hopefully the UMLL can be well represented there. To all teams who's first game is this weekend, good luck.
One thing I noticed with the 2 new rulings last weekend in our games, was that the faceoff rule turned out not to be very advantageous. Usually after the whistle we would try to push the fast break, but the ball was never right under you to pick up, which almost loses the fastbreak opportunity. You'll see this weekend. My word of advice: if the whistle blows on the faceoff, pick the ball up right away, so when they point at who has possession, you can actually go on the whistle (usually you can tell who jumped). I foresee some tactics where teams will draw a delay call, but I guess we'll see how its going to be called. Nevertheless, good luck to those teams playing this weekend.

Pretty Paul Lukas of me (ESPN Pg. 2 Writer of Uni Watch), but i know that SJU and UST got some new gear that will "help them play better" and look cool doing it.

I thought the new face off rule worked well in our game last week. Usually, the refs called the illegal procedure right away, the ball was picked up and it was off to the races for that team. Once both teams got used to the new procedure in the second half, the amount of calls dropped significantly.
I didn't really see any impact with the new 10 second rule, but I did get a FYI from the official that the ol' "one-handed baseball swing check while running behind a guy" (usually performed by trailing attack or mids) will be a point of emphasis for calling penalties this year. So, a little heads up on that one.
Good Luck to all teams competing this weekend, I look forward to seeing the Saturday Night games at our house.

I think that the new face-off rule poses a huge advantage for the team that gets the call their way. It was in effect only once in our(St. Cloud) game against the U of MN, we managed the fast break but couldn't bury. The only confusion that I saw was the wing play in that particular situation. I am not sure exactly what the ruling is on movement at the wing after the face-off with the new rule.

If there is a violation before, during, or after the face-off, the wing players are free to roam. If the wing man is over the line when the whistle is blown, it's a violation and the face-off man has to sub out.

Not just that situation: the point of emphasis is to call all illegal back checks.

Did SJU get those baby blue jerseys this year?

Unfortunately no. SJU did pick up at new white uni that was revealed at the national tournament last year (it has the SJU Cross on the sleeve) but the big update is a red c-pro with silver mask, white chin and strap. Almost the same as Cornell's buckets. A bit flashier then the all white c2 that SJU use to have.
