2008 Division 2 Impact Players

With the loss of Montana to and many of the leading scorers from last year gone, which players do you see jumping into the spotlight in 2008?

i guess i will take a crack at this, CWU has a middie they call Gooch, who has a great stick, after watching him and playing against him I couldn't understand how he didn't score more, also Joe Hodge has a pretty solid shot and a good stick. Schuit from WWU has good experience and will be looked at to be a consistent threat for them. Obviously Reid Petit for UPS and Tkachuk for PLU are studs and Alex White and number 6 for SOU will carry that offense. For Whitman I know Ogle is good and Bidnam Lee seemed to put up good numbers there as well. Those are just a few players I would watch out for to make some noise in this league this year.

After watching the UPS vs. SOU game over the weekend, you have to include Dan Snell and Carter Boggess in the group of "players to watch" from the PNCLL.

In addition to the players listed in the previous post, also watch for Burke of College of Idaho, Meikle at PLU, Hayden and Davis at WOU, Healy at WWU and the excellent goalie down at WOU - Steven Blair.

I know others will emerge, as they do every year. . .but these are some of the players I'm expecting big things from in 2008.

I don't believe Healy is rostered, and I have heard rumor that Burke may not be back this year. As far as Snell goes, as reigning defensive player of the year I figured him making noise was kind of a foregone conclusion, I'm just hoping I don't end up on the list of people he steam rolls this year, cuz I've been down that road and it aint fun. I agree with you on Boggess, he's a very sound goalie who doesn't take chances in cage, unlike our goalie who is pretty much one wild chance after another, we keep telling him to stay in the crease but at this point it pretty much falls on deaf ears. It does make the game a little more entertaining though. Now if we could just these last two weeks over and get on the field.

"even smaller than Travis" FOS Sam Suyehira should have another great year. I think Petit and Schuit (assuming he's not playing midfield) are the toughest at attack. Snell and Extine from WWU should lead the defense class this year. I thought Boggess was pretty solid last year, and I'd assume he's improved, so he'd be my leader of the goalie class with the losses of Colin and Noah. I'm also expecting Hayden and TChuck to put up big numbers again... and Burke if he's playing.

Schuit ran second-line midfield for WWU against us on Saturday. Good player, very smooth dodging skills. #9 Simmons scored most of their goals, he's a big Attackman who reminds me a little of that Berggren guy who used to play for PLU. Not great at creating his own shot but works hard to get open off-ball and a good finisher on the crease. He could put up big numbers in D2 if they keep getting him opportunities to go one-on-one with the opposing goalie.

Dan I feel as though your comment was both rude an insensitive :D

Very true, but pretty insensitive!

You're right. He's lost some weight & has much better feet. He's much improved already in his first game this season.

For full disclosure, Carter was my high school goalie, so that is the source of my continuing man-crush with his goalie abilities.

But in all honesty he is now the best goalie in the PNCLL D2, unfortunately I don't know much about goalies across the country but he should make a decent case for All-American soon. His natural instincts are amazing and his technique is solid. He doesn't do anything to beat himself and does everything to keep you from beating him.

A couple wildcard players to watch (assuming we already know those players who were "great" last season): Jason already mentioned him but Davis at WOU is going to be a stud for awhile. Erik Brown at L&C is very solid. Watch out for this Stoot at UPS, if he scores 3 on Boggess he's doing something right. Nate Hample at CofI is an athlete (and a name no one knows yet) who plays hard at both ends of the field and was most likely just beginning last year. PLU had a new little something in cage in fall ball who was very impressive. And Central Washington has a d-pole, #20 I believe its Gallacher, who can make plays defensively and moving the ball upfield. That's a few of the little guys who don't get much noise out on the street but should be playing much bigger roles this season.

The Goalie from PLU is Greg Fredlund who is even more exceptional because he hasn't played for all that long, he graduated from the same highschool as me, and i watched a few of their games last year and he was always very solid, doesn't make the insane saves, but makes all the saves you'd expect him to make, which in this league means he could have a very good freshman season. As far as anointing Boggess the best keeper in the league, I will have to politely disagree with you on that one, I feel like at this point our goalie could make a very strong case for this title, and the truth is our backup was honorable mention all state last year for Sunset High School in Beaverton and he didn't beat Steve out in preseason, lets just let the season play out a little bit before we make that kind of call. P.S. does anyone from College of Idaho have any light to shed on Burke because i heard from a student who transferred here from there that he wasn't playing this year.

I investigated upon reading your statement earlier and an inside source would neither confirm nor deny Burke's presence from CofI. My take on the situation is if no one is coming out to say he's there, he might not be there.

Also, my 100% biased opinion on Boggess was not meant to disparage your goalie at WOU. As you may recall your goalie has been allowed to run rampant on our team the last couple games so I am well aware of his strong abilities both in cage AND out :D But I will stick to my guns, Boggess will be AA one day soon.

Here are some of the players that should make some noise based on my opinion from what I saw last year and this fall:

CWU- Kevin Norris, Joe Hodge
WWU- Jake Schuit, Reid Anderson
PLU- Nic Tkachuk
UPS- Reid Petit
WOU- Nyc Hayden
Whitman- Bidnam Lee
SOU- Alex White
Kellen Gallacher #21

Well, seeing that you Yotes have yet to enter your roster on-line, this means that you can not have possibly printed out the eligibility check form either. If this doesn't get done in about 24 hours CofI will be forfeiting it's game next weekend against Whitman, and neither Burke, Hample nor Suyehira will be playing.

Remember the eligibility form must be signed by every player, notarized by the school registrar and then submitted to the MCLA VP for competition -- and at least seven days before your first game. I'd say that College of Idaho had better get busy!

PS Rude and insensitive, Kyle? By comparing a new impact player in D2 to a former All-Star? Hmmmm... interesting payback for trying to pay you a compliment. :D
