SELC History is almost complete!

SELC History is almost complete!

Postby Sonny on Tue Apr 10, 2007 11:10 am

Paging SELC alums & parents...... I'm finalizing the composite history of the conference since the very first year (1988) of SELC competition for this year's 20th anniversary tournament program.

I've finally assembled most of the information, but I'm still missing a few details. Note that sometimes the the years and the awards run together.

The tournament MVP is different then Player of the Year (POTY). POTY is for regular season play. And we only had one Tournament MVP up until the 1998 season when that award was split into two awards (One for Defensive and one for offensive).

Please share this link with alums that might not know about CollegeLAX or check the site regularly.

Here are my remaining unanswered questions:

1. Who won the Div. B Defensive POTY award winner in 2004? the 2005 winner was Geoff Fehling from Davidson. Did Geoff win back to back awards? The 2004 Offensive POTY was apparently Nic China of Wake Forest.

2. From the 1997 season - I need to know who the SELC Tournament MVP was. Tournament was held at Auburn that year on the Intramural Fields across from Frat Row. Was there two tourney MVP's awarded (one for Offensive and one for Defensive)?

NOTE: Player of the Year from 1997 was Georgia Tech's Harold Park. Ryan Meade of Auburn was POTY in 1998 the following season.

I also need to know who the Coach of the Year was for 1997. I think this might have been Auburn's Yancey Rushton, but I'm not certain.

3. 1995 season: I need to know who the Tournament MVP was and who the POTY was. Tournament was held at UGA Campus Recreation Fields near the Lake in Athens, GA (Vandy beat Emory in the finals).

I also need to know who won the Coach of the Year for 1995 and who won the Man of the Year for 1995.

4. 1994 season: I need to confirm who the Tournament MVP was and who the POTY was. Tournament was held at Forks of the River in East Knoxville, TN. (Tennessee beat Vandy in the finals for the 2nd straight year).

Buff Grubb (UT's coach at the time) seems to recall that Skip Fatkin (Tenessee Attackman) was Tournament MVP in 94 and that Brock Sturdivant (Vanderbilt) was the POTY.

Coach of the Year in 1994?? Buff Grubb was honored as Man of the Year. I don't think he got both awards.

5. 1993 season: End of year tourney was held at the Polo Fields in Atlanta, hosted by Georgia Tech. Peter Ernst of Vandy was tourney MVP. Duke Kennedy was POTY.

Need to know who the coach of the year was for that season, if any.

6. 1992 season: End of year tourney was held at the U. of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. need to know Tournament MVP, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year (if any) for that season. Vandy beat Tennessee for the title.

7. 1991 season: End of year tourney was held at the U. of Georgia Rec Fields in Athens. UGA beats Vandy for the title. (Can you say Navy Supply School? I can.) Conference President was Dwayne Smith (UGA Coach) at this time.

Need to know Tournament MVP, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year (if any) for that season.

8. 1990 season: End of year tourney was held at Emory in Atlanta. Clemson beat Vandy for the title.

Need to know Tournament MVP, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year (if any) for that season. Conference President was Clemson's Jack Igleman at this time.

9. 1989 season: End of year tourney was held at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Vandy beat Auburn for the title that year, for the 2nd straight year.

Need to know Tournament MVP, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year (if any) for that season.

10. 1988 season: First ever SELC tournament was held at Auburn. Vandy knocks off Auburn to win the first SELC crown. Need to know Tournament MVP, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year (if any) for that season.

There is no way in heck that Buff didn't get coach of the year that year. If he wasn't, he needs to be retroactively awarded it.
