Possible MLL Expansion News

Possible MLL Expansion News

Postby Neighbours on Fri Mar 18, 2005 2:50 am

Let's hope men's professional field lacrosse players never get as jaded as their baseball brethren, although the demand for their services can only skyrocket after Major League Lacrosse moguls announced that Los Angeles would be the home of the first of four expansion teams set to begin play in 2006.

The MLL's "Project West Coast" is good news for the Baltimore Bayhawks, who have yet to make any significant impact at the gate during a four-year run in Charm City playing at Towson and Johns Hopkins universities and what is now M&T Bank Stadium.

Nevertheless, the Baltimore franchise should appreciate in value as the league spreads to California and other western sites - possibly even to Texas, if a deal can be brokered with Mark Cuban, owner of the National Basketball Association's Dallas Mavericks.

By the way, the Bayhawks made room for 2002 and 2004 Tewaaraton Award winner Michael Powell when they traded standout attackman Mark Millon to the Boston Cannons for goalie Trevor Tierney and the fourth pick in the 2005 draft.

Bayhawk General Manager Jay Pivec disagreed that Millon was expendable, however.

"We feel that Michael is a feeder and that Mark is a creator and a finisher," he said. "The trade had nothing to do with Michael."

The feeling here is that Powell is no slouch when it comes to putting the ball in the net, and the Bayhawks were wise to nip a potential playing-time controversy in the bud. Syracuse University's all-time points leader totaled 150 goals and 157 assists in a brilliant career, meaning the rookie should be able to easily pick up the slack left by Millon's departure without adversely affecting team chemistry.

CA MLL Team

Postby Chicolaxalum34 on Fri Mar 18, 2005 3:53 am

I hear that Los Angles is supposed to be the future home of a MLL team, that team could be the Bayhawks. The might play at the Home Depot Center which was where they held the first four, im thinking the first four was put on to test the lax water on the west coast, dependining on its success would determine whether a team will make a move

The new team in LA is a new, expansion team, not an existing team.

Neighbors is right. There IS a brand new team starting up in LA in 2006 (there is a topic in this area about it) and they ARE playing at the HDC. Second of four expansion teams will be announced soon. As will another MLL addition that people have been asking about... my lips are sealed though.

4th pole!!!!! You've said too much. The game will be greatly improved if that is the case. All I need to hear is that the MLL is adding a fourth pole and coming to Denver, and that would pretty much make me happy. Hey Gregg, get me a job??

4th pole? I've never heard that discussed on this board before. But yes, I've said too much so I will not respond to anything on that subject anymore.

Speculation on MLL Expansion

MLL Expansion Speculation on the NLL Message Board

I don't know how valid the speculation on that message board is but it sure is exciting. The Burn's new facilitywould be a great venue for a Dallas team.

Just to confirm, according to our head coach Nate Watkins, who currently plays for the Rochester Rattlers, there will be an expansion team in LA in 2006. He says he will play for Rochester again this year, then try to play for the new LA team in 2006.

a 4th pole would be a great addition to the MLL, maybe less offense but youve still got the 2point line which would force the 4th poll to play tight so who knows

One in NC, perhaps Charlotte might not be a bad move

Gregg, you can never have too much initiative....

Why not one in Richmond VA?

If there is one south of Baltimore, I'll definitely have to start traveling...10 mpg or no...

LA? What is interest like in lala land? Why not San Diego, or the Bay Area, Denver, or Seattle? I figured those areas would get looked at sooner than LA. Perhaps 3 of the aforementioned 4 will be other expansion teams. How about tryouts? Drafts? Anything?

Expansion draft is in the fall, regular draft is January, collegiate draft is June 1.
