umll all time team??

Postby horn17 on Fri Dec 21, 2007 1:15 pm

With our league growing older and older every year....

I think this would be a great time for discussion among us alums/ older players/ and coaches to toss out ideas for an all time team here on our board .... or for example an all time marquette squad, etc.....

this is something fun open for discussion - just to keep the thoughts flowing over the holiday break, or if your me and you have to work, its so boring I REALLY NEED SOMETHING TO PASS THE TIME....

any takers...

I will post mine soon... and yes you can put yourself on your list if you want - But Fleck, please refrain from listing yourself 11 times....

Okay I am bored at work and will take the bait.

I will admit that I am not too up to date with the current team.... I will also admit that my memory is fading..... Sorry if I missed some good ones.

Attack: Shane Farell, Colin Anderson, Josh Swart, Tim Karlstad

Mid-Field: Gary Habisch, Darren Solem,......lots of other good ones (Aaron Olivier, Jay Zabel, Bill Carter, Tim Sheridan, Bontrager, Jesse Schlitzke, Ben Uzlik, Brian Caron.........)

FOGO: Andy Lindell

Defense: Chad Bjugan, Corey McKusic, Steve Dahlager, Brian Finnvik

LSM: Arron Kalis

G: Sam Litman, Scott Cater........Launert ? (never seen him play...I will this year!)

From other Teams:

Due to my affiliation with UMD, I'll not include any UMD players in this team. I'm approaching this as creating a whole "team" not just the top 10 players. Also - I'm NOT including any current players i.e. players currently on a UMLL team. I had to create some "end point". There are players I'd put on this team if I DIDN"T arbitrarily limit it to players done with their careers. Where there was a question between two players, I focused on players that had longer careers (i.e. not one year wonders) and were leaders as well as great players. I'm human, therefore biased. Curious to see other people's teams.

Goal (3)
Tim Roche. Mankato. A leader, A stopper and a great player. Was a Wall in the 2000 UMLL Final. A true leader on defense
Lance Kuhn - St. Olaf. Could keep an otherwise defensively challenged team in the game.
Chris Jenkins - A leader and super goalie who played with joy.

Defense (5): There have been many, So this is hard. First 3 that come to mind are Matt Onken/Al Kestler/Josh Rissman UofM - the backbone of an outstanding 2005 UofM UMLL championship team. Cameron Pederson - Moorhead - An NCAA D1 size/speed combination, long, mobile and effective defender for a new team. Had he been on an established team, could have been a Defensive player of the year candidate. Finally Chad Herr, Mankato, who was another physical presence on the early Mankato teams. We consistently had to game plan around him.

Runners up - Dan Willman - St. Johns & Tim Rourk Iowa State.

LSM (3):
Drew Radica Mankato, Drew did it all, and did it in the early/mid 90's. I've seen him cover the opponent's best player, strip the ball, lead the FB, get fouled, and score on man up.
Dylan Dickey Mankato. Big, strong, emotional leader of Mankato while the program was going through some tough times.
Jeff Dolan - Mankato - Unique stick skills and mobility.

Midfield (8) -
Luke Foslien Mankato. A dominant bull midfielder who could face of, draw the double and move the ball, after your double bounced off him.
Mike Tarjan - St. Thomas. A Chicago native who was a super all around midfielder. Became a HS Coach in the Chicagoland area. Flying Squirrel indeed.
Nick Lukovsky A star two way middy for the St Cloud teams in the 1996 -1998ish time period. Won face-offs, but was an offensive threat.
Brian Hurley & Matt Laabs UofM - Athletic, intelligent midfield leaders with offensive and defensive talent
Tim Vossen - Mankato. Tall, fast, had vision, could defend - name it, he could do it.
Brent Lamm - ISU. Singlehandly beat Mankato in 2001 playoffs. A dominant scorer with a cannon shot.
Matt Thomas - St. Cloud. A solid two way middy that did all the little things, as well as scored goals.

Runners Up - Evan Tornell St. Thomas

FO Specialist
Andy Schmidt - Mankato. Was unstoppable in the 2000 UMLL Final, especially in the 4th quarter when it counted most.

Attack -
Johnny Christ - Mankato. First of the strong left handed Minnesota finishers. Effective with and without the ball. Was a great rider.
Ben Mooney - UofM Perhaps one of the top 3 athletes to play the game, career cut short due to injury. A unique talent
Eugene Zevelev - UofM The QB of a UMLL Championship team in 2005.
Craig Fuller. St. CLoud. Played with a smile on his face, and stickwork that could not be duplicated.
Nick Thorson St. Cloud. Teamed with Fuller to make a ridiculously talented attack.

Runners Up - Ben Ivory St. Johns

So let the debate begin.

as far as goalies/ def go...not including present players....and tried not to include UMD as I can do that later...

1. Litman -UMD - was reliable and steady, but for somereason , woudl only clear to the right side of the field  , and was a 3 year starter - helped continue the torch passing of great UMD keepers (so much for the umd....)

2. Chris Jenkins - UMN- not only a great player to play with, but his love for the game, and dedication really showed up when you were an opponent playing against him - he brought out the best in me.....

3. Kurt Munchow -UMN - forgetting his last name...sorry buddy...I dont know how many times he stuffed me on fake high finish low in not only summer leagues but in regular play...I swear, i would have had probaly 6 more goals in one game if it wasnt for him....

Defense...

1. Cameron Pederson MSU - Morehead- a beast, a great leader, and one heck of an athlete - besides what other pole in our league history can pull the trigger at 92+ MPH with six feet of steel....

2. Joe Grannes SCSU- was often overlooked, but one hell of an athlete and an on the field general...Joe was very, very, very competitive, and when he slid, you were hoping he would not destroy you....

3. Josh Riskman / Al Kesler - UMN- this is a tie, because it was either one that I played against, they played extemely well with HIGH LAX IQ's....Al had a great stick, could snag anything out of the air and start a fast break the other direction...Riss was a beast he seemed like he was 6 foot 9 -but it was really like 6''3 - was very agile for his size, a great stick, and when the ball was on the other end, you could actually hold a very intellectual conversation with him

middies and attack to follow....

I see even lawyers get bored at work the Friday before Christmas....

Rob. I would include Sydney on your list for attack. He was a pain in the butt everytime we played him. So much so he was the attack MVP in 1999.

Your memory of names is much better than mine. On my original list change "chief" for Fuller and Nick Lukovsky for Luko.

They do. I didn't put Sydney on because of the longjevity issue. Sydney played for one, maybe two years (getting old - memory failing). All others played their entire 4 years. But you are correct in that for that year, 1999, he was the outstanding offensive player.

Isn't this the type of discussion humans used to have in person over a beer or a watercooler?

Yes, isn't the internet wonderful? Look how efficient our lives our now, we don't even have to get people together to discuss things!

Agreed about the longevity issue.

It is clear that most people will be biased towards their era, what position they played and who they played against the most. For example my list is littered middies and attack from teams like the U b.c they are the ones I remember. For $1000 I could not even name 3 other goalies or defensmen from other teams b.c I really didn't care about another team's defense/goalie. But then again I really didn't take the time to pay attention to anyone from the other team.

For that very reason, I think this is why Horn (attackman) listed goalies and defensmen first. Not attackmen or middies (who he had no contact with)

Of course everyone will stick to their era except Graff aka "Father Time of Minnesota Lacrosse" who transcends multiple eras. (now do you feel old?)

I agree with Champ. I wonder how many productive man hours are lost to the internet? I have been in my classroom since 8 am and I can say our district has lost about four from me a lone today.

very good point, as far as my memory goes back, it is hard to pull some prior to my time....ATTACK (please note , that this list includes only those who played for 4 years in the UMLL - obviously im biased to add myself, but that seemed like a pretty Flecky thing to do...  )

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Blaze Leutem (UMD) yet....

The first UMLL player to gain All Tourney awards at nationals...

He was fast, and practically unguardable when he got movin at top speeds...had great vision, and for someone with little lacrosse background before college - he could really find the open man very well when the slide came.....

Eugene Z (UMN) would also be in my attack list - see above - he continued to get better every single year, carried the 2005 team to the championship...

Jon Champ (UMD) - the greatest lefty finisher to ever step on field in the UMLL - nuff said - how bout a little 3-3 on man up ???? (im still your number one fan champ!!!)

Prior to me....Mooney, Thorsen, Fuller, Farrell (still has it, showed off turning the alumni game) - have played mens league with all three, know how good they are here, must have been a thing of beauty to watch Thorsen run around everyone when he was younger...

Oh boy...

The only SJU guy who could be on an "All-Time" team would be Lou Doth. He was arguably one of the best midfielders I have ever played with. On top of that, he was (is) a great spirit and easy to coach.

I vote for Blaze from Duluth. When he and Rob Horn played their best, it was like seeing double. They were everywhere.

I can't recall an LSM that played the entire game better then Jimmy VanGuilder. He was the bright spot on some pretty poor UST teams. He could control the face off from the wing, take the ball from anyone, was a complete hoover and probably moved better with a long pole then anyone I've seen up close (he defined the one man clear - because back then he had to). He put up goals against a lot of the goalies I've seen on this list too. He could make those that were trying to ride look ridiculous at times. Needless to say, I thought he was a pretty complete player. I think he gets overlooked a lot because UST wasn't that great when he played.
