2008 BCS & Bowl Game Discussion

Non-lacrosse specific topics.

My big question is....how did Illinois get a BCS game? I understand the whole "the Rose Bowl takes a Big 10 team, unless it's playing for the natl championship, then it has the option". That's great and all. But they picked the 3rd place team from the Big Ten. Yes UGA is the 3rd place team from the SEC, but look at their ranking. Illinois was 6-2 in conference, so was Michigan. Michigan beat Illinois. Michigan lost to Ohio State and Wisconsin. Illinois lost to Iowa and Michigan. I guess the Rose Bowl wants a guaranteed victory for USC. I don't like Michigan...but what the hell? How about Missouri and USC?

illinois 6-2 in conference
michigan 6-2 in conference

illinois overall record 9-3
michigan overall record 8-4
.... michigan lost to App state (34-32), and Oregon (39-7)
then end the season on a two game losing streak --> Wis. and OSU

illinois is on a four game win streak (including a win over OSU)

That is why Mich. can't get a BCS bowl bid.

It is a fact that there is not a bigger GT football hater on the planet than me...and I will bet money on that.

Maybe if you hadn't moved to St Louis and stopped tubing with us...you would know that .

Or perhaps if you hadn't stolen that lacrosse head from me you'd know.

You damn pack rat of lacrosse gear.

Just kidding, really, Danny... LSU is probably as deserving as anybody else to leap-frog over the teams above it in this year of parity in college football. We absolutely need to sue for a playoff system, 2007 will be "Exhibit A" at the trial.

I've already stated my personal opinion that Oklahoma and USC are probably the best two teams out there at this moment... but what does it matter? Ohio State is not as good as they were a year ago, when your Gators annihilated them. LSU will probably become the first two-loss team ever to wear the crown, but I really don't believe that either of these teams belongs in a national title game. True, LSU losses both came in triple OT, but the Tigers also struggled at other times to put away inferior opponents that they should have crushed. Ohio State lost at home to a mediocre Illini team and shouldn't get a shot at the title game either.

I'm not saying Michigan should go. It is flawed as hell that Illinois is going, in my opinion when they weren't even top 10 in the country, or even the 2nd place team in a weak Big Ten. They're regretting scheduling Oklahoma in the regular season this year. Next year they need to schedule Ball State instead, or perhaps San Diego State.

Missouri got hosed. Bad.

I believe the pac ten would have a second team playing this year if their quarterback hadn't blown out his ACL...

Yep, but then the Ducks might have worn those same hideous pajamas they wore against the Beavers in the Civil War, and all of America might have had recoiled in utter horror.

agree that OU and USC are very good right now. I would even put them slightly ahead of LSU right now. Given a month to heal (championship game time) i would put them as #1 followed by USC and OU.

Tracking the bashing is always fun here.

Looking forward to January 2. It should be sweet.

UF v Michigan

Postby swampthing on Mon Dec 03, 2007 4:52 pm

We'll see how they do without Braylon Edwards this time.

Despite UF's 3 losses, they're playing pretty good football too right now. I want to see UF v USC one of these years (maybe next years national title game!). A little east coast/west coast battle.

Anyhow, this is pretty far in advance, but . . .

LSU 24 OSU 21 the Tigers are very beatable this year so this should be closer than last year's championship
UGA 35 UH 14 - watch UH, they're small but they sacrifice their bodies to make big hits all the time
USC 28 IL 24 I don't know what Illinois will show up, but I saw them beat Ohio State and they looked great - I would love to be wrong on this pick.
OU 27 WVU 14 Pat White will be healthy, but it probably won't matter.
VT 21 KU 20 - Take some time to enjoy your kids/presents this Jan 3. Neither of these teams would bust a grape in a fruit fight

Florida 42 Michigan 28 I'm afraid Hart will have a big day, but so will Tebow.

Is this for 2007 or for at least the last 8? GT has average at least 5 loses a season since 2001.

Tennessee sucks too, ok, Sonny!

I had to stop today and say "Whoa hold on, me" after I proclaiming to myself that LSU would win by 60 over OSU easily in the worst title game ever.

Remember in 2002 when Miami was the greatest team ever? That team hadn't even lost a game, and then out of nowhere Ohio State came in and competed with them in every facet of the game and ultimately won (even if on a controversial call or two).

Then, remember last year? When Ohio State was undefeatable and Florida came in banged up from a tough SEC schedule, then on the opening kickoff it was already 7-0 OSU? Well Florida came back and showed them who the better team was.

My point is this: not only can you not expect a blowout in the title game this year, you never know what the heck to expect when Ohio State is involved!! At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucks hung 50 on LSU.

Not calling anything, I'm just saying that postseason NCAA football is never clearcut. I think Hawai'i, Illinois, Kansas, West Virginia, and Ohio State are gonna get to hear plenty over the next 30 days about how they don't need to show up cause they've already lost. If that isn't enough motivation, just look at what BCS underdogs have done EVERY YEAR of the BCS...they've won.

I know many will crap on the BCS for taking Kansas over Mizzou and Illinois over whoever but it really is not the BCS' fault. Blame the Orange Bowl and the Rose Bowl for selecting those teams. The BCS only really selects the title game.

I will say Mizzou got slightly shafted by the BCS since only two teams from a conference can play in a BCS Bowl but the bowl games pick the teams.

I am an OU fan, and I will even say that Missouri got shafted. Yeah Kansas had a better record, but the only big game they played, they lost - to Missouri. What a Joke.

This is the year where I would love to see a playoff, because there are a lot of teams who could argue they deserve a shot in the National Championship Game.

1. LSU - Probably the best team in the country and took two 3OT games for them to lose. They took the best shot from every team they played and still hung on to win.
2. Ohio St. - Not sure how good they are. The only big win they have was against a Michigan team with a hurt Mike Hart and a hurt Chad Henne.
3. OU - Beat Missouri twice, Texas, lost one game when Bradford got hurt, and lost one game they should have one.
4. USC - Starting to play really good football.
5. Georgia - Has a strong case, but if you don't win your conference, you have less of a case.
6. Va Tech - Blown out by then #1 LSU and lost to then #2 Boston College by one point. Va Tech has been playing much better football in the last month.
7. Missouri - Only two losses to # 3 team in the nation. Pretty good.

WE NEED A PLAYOFF - If it is all about money, it would be hard for me to believe that a college football playoff would not be more profitable.

The question is not "how much money"...but moreso "how much money for whom"

I will give you a playoff if you will agree that every conference deserves the same right to play in the playoff. Every conference must have a true champion, and every conference champion must be an AQ in the playoff. I am sick of college football being run by the BCS conferences.
