I could be wrong (someone correct me and explain if I am) but per my understanding, he is not...since he is using cells from bladders and other body parts.

The definition as I understand (let me know if I'm wrong or if the definition has changed) it is this. A stem cell is a "generic" cell that can make copies of itself indefinitely. Stem Cells have the ability to produce cells for tissues in the body. IE) heart, liver, brain, etc.....Stem cells are virtually maintained forever, developing them into specialized cells as needed.

There are two basic types of stem cells:

Embryonic - these are obtained from either aborted fetuses or fertilized eggs that are left over from IVF. These are very useful because they can produce cells for any purposes.

Adult – They are not as versatile because they are specific to certain cell types. IE) blood, intestines, skin, and muscle to name a few. The term can be misleading, but both adults and children have them.

Wow that is pretty amazing stuff! And on a side note, I read over turkey break in the Omaha World Herrald that they have created stem cells out of skin cells which would help cure many deseases without killing embryos, a task i think would please both sides of the political spectrum. I mean unless you just really want to kill embryos. Ill try and find and post the article.

So is the anti-cloning debate strictly about stem cells...or is their a religious backing to it as well that would prevent cloning even in a non-lethal form?

Not necessarily. I think there are alot of different aspects that could be brought to discussion on this topic. However, I personally don't agree with cloning itself. Cells yes, people and animals...no. I however believe that this new breakthrough could be used to help cure such diseases as parkinsons or altzheimers(sp?). Not loosing life to do stem cell research, i believe, will flip a ton of non-extremist right wingers to the cause of this important research. More bi-partisan support could equal more funding to cure many of these uncured diseases. Even though i am a republian and love to keep my money in my pocket, I would support the funding of something like that.

Getting back to the original video, this is wonderful stuff. Using your own cells to create a replacement part. Replacing whole organs with no fear of rejection. Wow is right. There must be a reason that we don't know more about this. Is there some issue with it?
