So my pet project, http://www.freeteams.net is now 5 months old. It's generating a decent amount of traffic and getting a few teams signing up per day. We're up to about 420 teams total. While this is great, I am only advertising online and I'd like to reach a wider audience and really make a dent in the market (currently eTeamz has around 3,000,000 teams signed up - they offer paid sites and a very limited free site). While I have a good deal of knowledge about online marketing and advertising, I'm still very inexperienced and underpowered as far as traditional advertising goes.
I think the best way to reach more teams would be to canvas sports tournaments throughout the english-speaking world with flyers or perhaps even sponsor a few tournaments or teams. Many of the teams aren't thinking about websites, even from a free service, and aren't going to see my online advertisements at Google, Yahoo, etc. Other options would be to put up signs in gyms and sports stores, or to trade advertising (put their ads at our site for a little while). The catch with all of this of course, is that I am operating on a shoestring budget.
Does anyone out here in CollegeLax Land have any good ideas as to how I can accomplish real-world marketing, or even be willing to help get the word out in exchange for apparel or whatever else I can come up with for compensation (possibly even a small cash amount per team referred). Thanks everyone.
