CSU VS BYU

It seemed to me that BYU looked a little fatigued right about the time CSU went on their 3 goal run. Also, I thought the BYU goalie in the first half looked a little better than the one in the second half. I'm not convinced about the 2 goalie thing. Alex has also mentioned this before, but I think they ought to choose one and go with him. Gives more continuity to the defense. There were times that the game looked ragged and times when the play was sharp, especially on the offensive side. BYU just got caught overpursuing too many times and they need to figure out how to defend the diagonal pass to the man on the backside. That was open way too many times.

I forgot to mention Dan Cole (#12) and Tyler Monteath (#6) for BYU. Despite all the stars on that team, I thought those two were perhaps the most impressive. Bershinsky and Price basically held Mark Davis in check, but when Monteath had the ball, the BYU offense looked pretty good. Cole is probably as good of a freshman as there is in the MDIA.
Always on point . . .

Valid points all-around...I was actually pleased with the way BYU competed. The man-up possession with just under 2 minutes left when they couldn't get a good shot pretty much ended the game.
I, too, am not sold on the merits of playing two goalies. I thought Powers played well in the first half and there's always a bit of uncertainty changing goalies.
I'd like to hear from anyone that was at the CSU/UCSB game and then watched this game on TV...how do BYU and UCSB compare? I'm headed to Provo next week for the game.

It's really hard to compare UCSB to BYU based on the way they played CSU. If Jokisch had played like he did against UCSB, the score might have been 12-4; he was that good that day against SB. Also, CSU didn't make near the amount of turnovers against SB that they did against BYU, so it's kind of comparing apples to oranges looking at these 2 games. I'd think that SB is probably better than BYU based on the strength of their defense, but we will certainly find out next week.

I was surprised by the fact that BYU tried to match CSU's up tempo style in the game rather than try to control the pace more. They pretty much allowed CSU to get the looks they wanted (transition, etc.) rather than take them out of their game. BYU has good team speed and good skill players, but I don't know if that style fits them too well. At times, the game was played at a very frantic pace which appeared to hurt BYU more often than help them. Is this the kind of game these two teams have played in the past? It seems that this plays right into CSU's hands.

I don't know that BYU tried to run with CSU, but I felt that BYU was very impatient on offense. It seemed like a lot of 1-on-1, make a dodge and go to the goal.
I was impressed with CSU's discipline. When the transition game is not there, they're able to pull the ball out and run an effective motion offense.
I haven't seen any stats, but I would think that CSU had a higher percentage of goals via the assist.

I think BYUALUM's comment regarding decisonmaking was the key to the game for CSU. Cunningham and Harper more often than not make outstanding decisions on when to take advantage of the unsettled situation and when to pull out/set up.

I believe that BYUTv will be replaying the game...maybe this weekend? I can't remember.

I actually liked seeing BYU play at a little faster pace. I think it fits their personnel this year. Plus, they haven't really tried to push CSU's middies in transition for the last couple of years. I think that it served them well, as they got a number of very good looks at the goal, and converted some of those opportunities. Although their decision-making was a little suspect at times, BYU's problem was not on offense...they scored 10 goals. Well, maybe 9 goals and they got 1 gift.
