Question about naming of UMLL schools

Question about naming of UMLL schools

Postby Sonny on Tue Mar 15, 2005 10:42 am

Do the two "state" schools in Minnesota (Minnesota State Moorhead & Minnesota State Mankato) go by shorter names when referencing their athletic teams? (Like they do in California) i.e. Moorhead State or Mankato State. Or can we refer to them as MSU-Moorhead & MSU-Mankato.

It may be better to use MnSU - Mankato, etc. to minimize confusion with the Spartans at MSU.

my buddy plays for mankato baseball...they all hate mankato state, they used to be called that. Now that they are minnesota state-mankato they like MSU-M, so MSU-Mankato would be the best.

Since they are Minnesota State Universitys there has been a big fuss about making sure that they now have Minnesota State University before the name. So we go by MSU-Moorhead, MSU-Mankato.

For just "casual" conversations like on the message boards, most people in the Minnesota just use the town names (Mankato; Moorhead). But for "official" things, the MSU-Town, or the Minnesota State-Town is more appropriate. I think the Minnesota State-Town is less confusing if somebody not from the Minnesota area didn't know what MSU stood for.
