Good question. They just got a lot easier to come by.

Have Michigan and Ohio State ever gotten together for a game/scrimmage? Are there any plans to ever try?

I'm pretty sure they have, and I'm pretty sure OSU wins most of them.

We did two years ago, in their first Breschi Invitational. It was us, OSU, Butler and Maryland. We were up 4-3 at the half (against mostly their younger guys, and then lost in the second half when they brought in their starters). Lost to Butler by one. Didn't play Maryland.

This fall we scrimmage three D1 teams and two D3 teams. Hopkins, Army and Bellarmine, plus Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster. We also scrimmage D3 Wittenberg before the regular season in the spring and play Kenyon in a game in mid-February. We've been incredibly fortunate to get the opportunities we've had to play these kind of programs.

No plans to play App. State.

I have a question and it is meant to be respectful......

why are D-1 teams taking the time to travel to non NCAA schools for scrimmages? What do they have to gain? Win by a lot and it is expected, close game or even a loss and it bad for the program.

I think it is great that they are doing this but I just wonder what the reason is?

PS Again, not meant to slam any program or the league!

Four reasons:
1. Great opportunity for both coaches to bring their kids to a big time football atmosphere (no jokes about our team this year please) - which is something most of them will never experience otherwise.
2. Good recruiting opportunity.
3. Coaches are all friends.
4. May help a school that is trying to go D1 promote their program, both internally and externally.

I would argue that a close game or loss would not hurt a program like Hopkins at all. Say they play their young guys and the club team plays their vets and somehow pulls an App State upset. Do you really think that will dissuade blue chip recruits from committing to Hopkins? They are the defending D1 national champs. Everyone knows how good they are and how their program is run, regardless of any fallball results. I think their program is safe.

Sounds like good reasons to me. I was just wondering what the thinking was behind the game.

On a different level but under the same concept. A few years back the US Olympic Women's Hockey team played an exibition game against a Boys High School Team (Warroad, which is a class A school, with AA being the largest) and lost. It didn't look good for our Olympians! I thought after the game, Why would the Olympic team even decide to play a high school team? They were in a no win situation.

The lax deal sounds like a lot of fun and a good opportunity to promote our league.....good luck!

There were those who said the boys were the ones in a no-win situation. There are still a lot of people out there who think that men should never lose to women, which is completely stupid. What percentage of men do you think could, say, beat the women's 5000m track champion or the women's 100m freestyle champion? Probably less than 1 in 10,000. Should the other 99.99% of men be shamed because there's a woman that can beat them?!

The women's hockey team was trying to play men's teams to get experience playing against superior speed so they could defeat Canada in the Olympic finals. It was a good idea, but . . . .

Re. Warroad having something to lose. The fact still remains that a second rate high school hockey team was taking on the "best" athletes the US had to offer in that particular sport....regardless of sex.

In any event why is the game being played? If both sides have nothing to gain?

Obviously each side must have thought they had something to gain. Just because you don't understand their motivations doesn't mean they don't have good ones. (It's kind of like on Beavis and Butt-head: whenever they couldn't understand someone's motivation, they'd say, "Maybe they're just stupid!")

The US wanted experience against superior speed, and Warroad probably wanted the prestige of having the Women's US Olympic Hockey team come to town. They probably also made a fortune in ticket sales. Don't they bill themselves as Hockeytown USA or something?

And why do you call Warroad second-rate? They seem to hang with the top AA teams in the state.

Warroad is by no means second rate.

They have always been a strong contender and one of the teams that makes me hate AA and A divisions in highschool hockey. Having a Warroad beat a Duluth East, Jefferson, Edina, Hill Murray in the finals would be something to see. They should have that opportunity.

Now back on track

Regardless of what their motivation is, the headline is still "USA Olympic Team Loses to a high school team. It sure doesn't bode well for our olympic team or women's sports. So yeah Beavis and I think it was stupid.

I totally agree that Warroad should move up to A (like Roseau) but they are in class A, and the fact still remains that our olympic team lost to a lower class high school team.
