My middle school team ran that exact play back in the day. We ran it to perfection and scored an 80 yard TD against the best team in the league. We called it "spook"

Legal? I don't see why not. Lame? Absolutely. I'd be fired up if the other team pulled a stunt like that.

NCAA Rules - lot of variables that may make it legal or illegal. You can hear the coach from the sideline discussing the "wrong ball" with the QB. If this is done before the snap, the play is definitely illegal. You see this more often using a "substitute" who is called to the sideline and just before he gets there, the ball is snapped and thrown to him presumibly with no defender covering him. However, in this case it was done after the ball appears to be legally snapped. If indeed the ball was legally snapped and no other rules have been broken, then I think you have a smart coach.

The snap of the ball can be either between the legs or a simple hand-off which it was in this case. As long as no one moves once they are set, then it is a legal play which it is in this case. We just had to let the ref know ahead of time not to blow the whistle thus killing the play. This play is 100% legal

While it may be legal, I would consider it poor sportsmanship and poor coaching. Football at that stage should be about teaching fundamentals rather than trickery and winning at all cost.

Oh common, our team sucked and I think this lead to our only win of the season. You gotta keep kids entertained right?

Funny you should be the one to say bootsy brauck cause weren't you the one walking around nationals with a boot on your leg because of some dumb incident the night before? So in your case your nickname could be bootsy because of how pathetic you looked wearing one...haha...good times
