Denver - Midfielder Brian Langtry scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Denver Outlaws (5-4) to their third win in the last four games, a 15-13 victory over the defending MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage (6-3) at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Saturday evening. The loss snapped the Barrage's three-game win streak and allowed the Outlaws to avenge a loss against Philadelphia in last year's New Balance MLL Championship Game.
Attackman Drew Westervelt gave the Outlaws a 1-0 lead just 1:18 into the first quarter by converting a feed from midfielder Benson Erwin, but the Barrage countered with three straight goals to take a two-goal lead. However, the Outlaws responded with a three-goal run, including Westervelt's second goal of the quarter, to regain the one-goal edge with 1:05 left in the first stanza.
After the teams traded a pair of goals, the Outlaws extended their advantage to 8-5 with back-to-back goals from Langtry and attackman Brendan Mundorf, but the Barrage answered with tallies from rookie attackman Ian Dingman and Michael Springer, narrowing the margin to 8-7 at the intermission.
The teams traded goals four times during the third quarter, including a pair of goals by Denver midfielder Josh Sims, before the Outlaws put together a three-goal rally to begin the fourth quarter. Langtry scored on an unassisted goal just 26 seconds into the period before attackman Matt Brown recorded a pair of markers, giving Denver a 15-11 lead. Springer scored a two-point goal with 1:08 left to cut the margin to 15-13, but the Barrage were unable to complete the comeback.
Langtry was named the Bud Light MVP for his five-point performance while Brown added three goals. Goalkeeper Trevor Tierney made 17 saves for the Outlaws, who out shot Philadelphia by a 53-44 margin. Springer led Philadelphia in a losing effort with four goals, including a two-pointer, while attackman Ryan Boyle scored a goal and added three assists. Goalkeeper Brian Dougherty made 21 saves, including 15 in the first half, for the Barrage.
Next up for the Outlaws is a July 28 road game against the Long Island Lizards. Denver looks to get on a roll with a win in Long Island and make a playoff push as the season winds down.
