WCLL Week 7 (3/9 - 3/15): Schedule, Thoughts, & Scores

Postby Baller1 on Sun Mar 13, 2005 12:31 am

Santa Clara 12
St. Mary's 7

Santa Clara had a great game and held Peter Burns to only 1 or two goals Plus it was 11-4 in the fourth and they scored 3 quick goals as Santa Clara's bench was being emptied. So it was not as close as the score indicates

Edit** Sorry I meant 11-4 in the fourth.

How was it 15-4 in the fourth when the final was 12-7? Which score is correct?

Danny Hogan wrote:good post, however i think you might be too caught up in comparing scores with regard to VT-LMU and linking it to sonoma. you can only go so far with stuff like that. The Mich-Zona-BYU and Washington-SFU-Chico thing would put us all in the nuthouse.

from the scores page... VT 14, LMU 3. Gotta agree with Danny on this one, scoring comparison will only drive you crazy. But you've gotta give VT the benefit of the doubt here. Flying out, getting used to the time zone, playing 3 away games vs. solid competition and coming out with a 2-1 record and a 3 goal loss to the #3 team in the nation just says that VT is back to where they were a few years ago - being able to challenge the top teams and on a good day able to beat almost anyone.

Oh for sure, I wasn't trying to get caught up or bring doubt. I was merely saying that V Tech had a chance to remove doubt with a strong showing. They did.

I think the biggest surprise score I've seen from the weekend so far HAS to be the SDSU Arizona score of 9 - 7. Tough to gauge. At the very beginning I thought that SDSU might come out and surprise some people this year when they beat LMU 5-0 at LMU. Then they lost to UCSB 17-0 and I figured the game not as telling. Now they put up a very good showing against Zona. ASU puts up a good showing against UCSD, then tomorrow Zona and UCSD meet at UCSD. WCLL south beginning to be laced with question marks? (no prolly not, but it certainly means that there might not be as much variance in the team strength there that I thought there was.

Although I don't know the score, I just heard that Arizona beat UCSD in double overtime.

Sounds like a great day of games in Cali. That's three one goal games, two in overtime? Good lax out west. Anyone else think the WCLL playoffs are going to get crazy?

Arizona 12
UCSD 11
double overtime

UCSD came to play today but #8 for Arizona scored an amazeing goal in double overtime to win it. Nick Dean played great, but Zona had the talent to take it.

would anyone be willing to contend that this was perhaps the best week of WCLL regular season lacrosse ever?

I have come out of retirement to make a quick post about the UCSB/CSU game. I would first like to tip my hat to the CSU players and coaches for winning such a hard fought game. Jokisch, played amazing and really was the difference in the game. CSU was able to score when the opportunity was there and UCSB could just not get it done.
Looking at the game stats, UCSB won every statistical category except saves and goals. UCSB out ground balled 41-31, they out shot 49-23, and won 13 of 18 face offs. Obviously goals are all that matter, garbage or not but did the better team win? In the last two national championship games, in my opinion the better team has not won either. Did that happen on Saturday?

Yes, obviously the better team won in both cases, since they scored more goals! It seems like you are disparaging CSU's efforts, implying that since they lost on ground balls, shots and faceoffs that they were the poorer team. Why negate the obvious truth, that tickling the twine is the ONLY measure that really counts?

I've read other posts from other conferences where guys are saying "we didn't show up to play", yadda, yadda. I'm sorry, but that's the point of playing the games!! Play your best, take the results and if you lose, you weren't the "better" team.

From WCLL.COM

Arizona wins 12-11 in double overtime, with a goal from Greg Polheber(2g,3a).Arizona triumphed in one of the best played lacrosse games in recent WCLL history. Arizona came out a bit flat and UCSD took advatage of it, scoring 5 goals in the 1st quarter on 13 shots. Arizona did happen to pump in 3 goals also on only 7 shots. Making the score at the end of the first 5-3. The second quarter and the rest of the game was all about goaltending and Arizona was led by Charlie Salemi(25 saves) between the pipes. Arizona scored 3 goals in the second on 7 shots and UCSD failed to score, eventhough they managed to get off 9 more shots. Making the score at the half 6-5 arizona. They second half was filled with streaks and emotions by both clubs. The Laxcats managed to come out strong and score 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of the quarter, to give them their largest lead of the day at 8-5. The remainder of the quarter belonged to UCSD and Chris McCall, who score 3 of the 4 goals for UCSD in the final 4 minutes of the quarter. Making the score after 3 quarters 9-8 UCSD. The fourth quarter was filled with great goalie play and great defense on both sides. With no scoring for the first 6 minutes of the quarter, Arizona got 2 unanswered goals, coming from defensemen Carson Parmelee and LSM Tim McComb. Giving The Blue of Arizona a one goal led with 8 minutes to play. But this game was far from over. UCSD stormed back at Arizona with 2 unanswered goals of their own, one of which coming from their great attackmen Nick Dean (2g,2a). Giving the Tritons a one goal advanatage with 6 1/2 minutes to play. Arizona Answered right back and scored 30 seconds later, with a goal by freshmen Shane Morrison. It was the first goal of his young career. Both goalies would shut the doors to the cages for the remainder of the quarter. Arizona got called with a slashing penalty with 1 second left in the game. Giving UCSD a extra man advantage to start overtime. The score after 4 quarters was 11-11. Both squads played well in the first overtime, UCSD managed to get off better shot, but Charlie Salemi would not let the ball get by, making 5 saves in the first overtime. Arizona managed to get off 2 shots, but both sailed wide. Arizona got called for another penalty at the end of the first overtime giving UCSD another man advanatage to start the quarter. In the Second overtime Arizona stop UCSD's man up and recieved an extra man adavatage for themselves. With 3 minutes left on the clock UCSD stopped Arizona's Man up. Arizona was able to retain possession of the ball and reconize a middie covering thier attackmen Greg Polheber. Greg recieved the ball behind the cage and beat the short stick to score the game winner. Both teams played with lots of heart. A very well coached UCSD team played hard to the end and showed how good of a team they are. Arizona would like to wish them good luck for the rest of the year and thank them for a playing an excellent game.
