Bayhawks Stop Skid, Down S.F. Dragons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Attackman Conor Gill scored the game-winning goal with just four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as the Washington Bayhawks (5-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 16-15 victory over the San Francisco Dragons (2-6) at Kezar Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Bayhawks' fourth one-goal victory this year and their first win since a three-point victory against Long Island on June 9.

After the teams traded goals to open the game, attackman Tom Marechek scored off a Gill feed to give Washington a 2-1 lead with 8:35 left in the first quarter. The Dragons countered with back-to-back goals, including a two-point tally from midfielder Chris Rotelli, to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the period.

Midfielder Bill McGlone cut the Bayhawks' deficit to 4-3 with an unassisted tally just 20 seconds into the second quarter, but the Dragons responded by scoring four of the next five goals to take a 8-4 advantage with 5:09 left in the stanza. Gill scored a two-point goal off a feed from midfielder Kyle Dixon to narrow the margin to 8-6 before attackman Matt Alrich extended the Dragons' lead to 9-6 heading into the intermission.

McGlone scored his second goal of the game to begin the third quarter, an unassisted marker just 23 seconds into the period, before Rotelli and attackman Hunter Lochte tallied consecutive goals for an 11-7 edge with 8:02 left in the period.

However, the Bayhawks narrowed the margin to 12-11 by scoring four of the final five points in the third quarter. The teams traded goals before Gill scored his second two-point goal of the game off a Dixon assist with 4:16 left. With 3:03 remaining, attackman Matt Ward tallied his first goal of the game off an assist from midfielder Mark Frye.

The Bayhawks took a 14-12 lead in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter by scoring three straight power-play goals. Marechek scored off a feed from Gill before attackman Andrew Combs added back-to-back goals, giving Washington a two-point advantage. But, the Dragons countered by scoring a pair of unanswered goals to even the score at 14-14 with 8:50 left.

The teams traded goals to set up Gill's game-winning heroics.

Marechek led the Bayhawks to the victory by scoring five goals with an assist while Gill tallied three goals, including a pair of two-point markers, and also had three assists. Goalkeeper Chris Garrity made 22 saves in the victory for Washington.

Rotelli scored four goals, including a two-pointer, and added three assists to lead San Francisco in a losing effort while midfielder Jarett Park posted a three-goal effort.
