PHOENIX (AP) -- A California man smashed the world record for hot dog eating at a contest Saturday, gobbling up more than 59 franks in 12 minutes.

Joey Chestnut, 22, of San Jose, shattered the record held by Takeru Kobayashi of Japan by downing 59 1/2 "HBDs" -- hot dogs and buns -- during the Southwest Regional Hot Dog Eating Championship at the Arizona Mills Mall in suburban Tempe.

USA! USA! USA!

Yeah!! Whoo!!! We can out eat anyone!!! We should make this a team competition, where all of Japan tries to eat more than an equal number of Americans (or is it Americas?

). We would beat them senseless. Their one MVP may be great, but it takes a team to create an obesity epidemic.

Not since Jack Burton defeated Lo Pan in the 1986 documentary Big Trouble in Little China, have I been filled with such pride in America over Asians.

Chestnut breaking the record totally makes up for American Terrance Trammell's defeat in the 110-metres at the Athens Olympics to China's Liu Xang.

So do we elevate the surname Chestnut into the pantheon of the great Americans who beat down the Japanese? I can see it now: The Mount Rushmore of American Imperialism:
