iPod vs Others

Non-lacrosse specific topics.

I'm not a huge portable music fan as I don't want to carry yet another electronic device after cell phone & corporate blackberry. But the more and more I play with my wife's Ipod, I think the Ipod/ITunes combo is pretty slick. It is a live saver on a noisy airplane! :)

I do find it ironic that all the Apple Fans that complained for years and years about how Microsoft/Windows is shoving everything down our throats in a proprietary format - now is 100% behind the Ipod/ITunes format which basically does the same thing. You can't share files between Ipods without some black market/3rd party work around. And every time you attempt to sync up an Ipod with a computer, ITunes wants to wipe the Ipod clean and start from scratch.

Yea no one listens to marketing. They buy products based simply on need.

its hard to bash a product that has sold 100 million units.

Like Microsoft Windows. The iPod isn't trash..it's a really great product...that doesn't mean that there aren't better units out there.

On a side note:

100 million iPods sold? That's a LOT of illegal music. Id love to see some stats as to how much of that music is legal. Perhaps the hit that the music industry has taken is not quite as large as the gain of the Computer/Advertising/mp3-player world.

You think Apple cares if you give your songs to everyone on the planet? It is the recording industry that cares and requires songs purchased from the iTunes store to carry DRM protection (ACC format). Apple is leading the way in convincing record labels to publish music without DRM -- EMI is releasing their collection in MP3 format without DRM.

All music downloading services (napster, sony, MS) carry DRM. Apple is not jamming any proprietary format on anyone. Zune and the MS posse is far more proprietary. Even songs previously purchased have to be repurchasd from the Zune Marketplace. A song does not require DRM and does not have to be purchased from the iTunes store to play on the ipod. and who uses a jewish cuss word for the their product name?

Using the ipod on different computers simply requires setting iTunes to manually update your ipod. If iTunes is set to automatically update your ipod -- then yes when you plug in an ipod it wants to synchonize it with your library.

Joe T -- I think you may be surprised at the amount of music being downloaded legally thru outlets like iTunes.

It's easy to trash windows. I wouldn't consider it a great product. And the numbder of people that have a problem with Windows might be 100%.

I mean there's definitely a lot of $$$ going through iTunes. I mean hell, I buy music from iTunes out of sheer convenience/price. Their sales are huuuuuge. I just can't begin to imagine how much music gets downloaded via torrents, Ares, Limewire, etc in comparison. I may have to research that.

The ipod mini was discontinued 2 years ago.

1) That "sending music option" is something I'll never mess with.
2) The iPod mini had awful battery life, and I haven't seen anything to prove the contrary on the Nanos and their 1" by 1" screen are horrible overpriced, still. I'll save $50 for something with a better battery that plays music.
3) Britney is a cow.

My nano life is about 6 hours if im running with it with my Nike + , or about 10 without my nike kit...you numbers are way off, but it also depends on the settings you have it with...

The advantage of IPOD....everything else will be obsolete in 3 years, and good luck finding someone to fix one of the creative lab devices....

My Cowon video player battery life is 10 hours video (4" screen) and 20 hours audio.

This is a very good product if you want more video than audio. i.e. if you do a lot of airplane travel, this thing kicks butt. Big screen, long battery life, good picture and top of class sound.

That device also has a lithunm (SP) battery correct??? So when that wears out, you have to buy a new one Champ? Or did it come with a replacement? Just wondering...it seems neat, just not like something Id want to use with my mac....

Correct, but after a year of use I still get 10 hours or so of video so unless the battery just ups and dies instead of "wearing out," it is doing quite well.

Why not use it with a Mac? Upon connecting it just acts as an external drive, much like a USB thumb drive. It also has a program that organizes music/videos etc. for you but I just do that myself. You have the option!

If the RIAA can't come up with a number I don't think you will have much luck.

I think it's safe to assume that it is a huge amount, but I'm trying to figure out why you would want a specific number. Worried that the Big 4 have seen a marginal dip in profits?

Something about opportunity cost...[/b]

Just curious. There's definitely a good bit of stuff getting moved, much to the RIAA's dismay.

What I think is funny is that Ares, Limewire, Torrents, etc could be shut down very easily (similar to the Napster crackdown)...but whoever is in charge isn't doing so. I guess there's a lot more $ to be had with computers, cd/dvd burners and MP3 players as opposed to buying CD's of today's top role models like Britney, Paris and Lindsey.
