WCLL Week 7 (3/9 - 3/15): Schedule, Thoughts, & Scores

After scoring the first goal of the game, Chapman was thoroughly outplayed throughout the remainder of the first half, with Virginia Tech leading the game 8-2 at halftime. Chapman made numerous mistakes in the first half, which gave Virginia Tech the opportunity to possess the ball on their offensive end for the majority of the half. After a few halftime adjustments, Chapman battled back controlling play throughout the third quarter. V Tech's lead was 8-5 going into the fourth, before Chapman scored again closing the margin to 8-6. Chapman's undisciplined play lead to a 3 man up opportunity for V Tech, however, Chapman's back up goalie, Sean Solomon stood tall, and made two crucial saves to keep the Panthers within two. The Hokies added a fast break goal to make it 9-6, and immediately, Chapman's offense answered to make it 9-7. After two penalities by Virginia Tech, Chapman had an incredible opportunity to bring the game within 1. Unfortunately, Danny Metoyer's shot drummed off the crossbar. The Hokies forced a turnover in the last 30 seconds of Chapman's man up, which turned out to be a crucial point in the game. Chapman saw several great opportunities to narrow the margin in the last quarter, however, V Tech held on to their 2 goal margin defeating the Panthers 10-8.

I think there is no need to debate what will be the most watched game of the season, but there are also some other very telling games going on this weekend. What do you guys think about some of the other games going on this weekend?

I've pulled out the games that I think are going to be the bigger (more important to the polls) match ups of the weekend.

V Tech vs. LMU- now while at first glance this game looks like it's going to be a walk for V Tech, I think the biggest poll ramifications this could have would be for Chapman. If V Tech comes out and blows the Lions away, then there could be much to be said for Chapman (now ranked 24 if memory serves me) pushing them to an 8-10 game. On the flip side, if LMU pushes V Tech into another close game, it raises issues in regards to V Tech's ranking (and throws a question mark into their Noma game)

Simon Frase vs. CPSLO - Clearly this one is going to be an important game, if for no reason than either justifying Poly's slip in the polls, or sparking some favor for them in the eyes of the pollsters. SFU, coming off of a love-triangle of wins and losses in the PNCLL with Oregon, Chico, and a newly emerging Washington team. This game will go quite a distance (as do all OOC games) in determining the power relationship between two conferences.

Zona vs. UCSD - I would say probably the second most important game this weekend (other than that one game, between those two teams...). A UCSD team that has so far moved up ten spots in the polls hits Zona, who has been gracing the top ten for over a year now, currently at #6. Not only is this game important for polls (duh) but a UCSD win should nearly lock them for a nationals bid. Here's why- the winner of this game will be the #1 seat in the WCLL South. If it's UCSD, then they go on to play (probably) Chapman in the WCLL playoffs. The loser of this game draws the Gauchos and relies on their at large chances. If Zona wins, they almost for sure have an at large for their big wins this season so far. If UCSD wins, look for their climb in the polls to continue.

Noma vs. Chico- This is Chico's chance. With the rest of their season fairly void of powerhouse teams (yes, they fell into the trap of scheduling OOC games that were SUPPOSED to be against highly ranked teams), this will be their last chance to make any large moves in the polls with an upset of this magnitude. On the flip side, Noma is out to prove something. The catch is... Noma hasn't done much to prove HOW good they are, and I don't mean that in a negative way. They haven't lost a game. They beat Zona 10-6 while away. We know they're in the top 5. The big question mark lies in "where" in the top 5. Look to the end of the month for more of a pressure gauge for this team, when Noma hits Oregon and the Rams, as well as a later season matchup with BYU.


Lemme know what your thoughts are, anyone. Or post updates on scores. Whatever. Tell me why I'm wrong... Tell my why I'm right... Thoughts?

Good post. I'm interested to see how the new WCLL alignment will affect the playoffs, and this weekend will basically determine two divisions in the WCLL. Big games out west. I get the feeling that Sonoma is a little bit better than people have been giving them credit for. They have a strong defense and graduated some personalities, but I think they also have some good midfielders that can really cause problems.

That's basically the feeling I have. They've hit Zona and beat them away, and have yet to hit an opponent that's ranked higher than them. I think it's going to be interesting to see what happens later in the season to see what kind of fight there will be against the Rams. I just think there's no way to know if Noma might be a sleeping giant.

good post, however i think you might be too caught up in comparing scores with regard to VT-LMU and linking it to sonoma. you can only go so far with stuff like that. The Mich-Zona-BYU and Washington-SFU-Chico thing would put us all in the nuthouse.

The game was more lopsided than the score indicates. The officials were constantly on the whistle, atleast in part because of the classless play by some of the SFU players, to try and keep the players safe. Lots of late hits in the second half of the game. All Cal Poly players had significant time. Tom Alderman had over a dozen ground balls, Parr was spectacular in and out of the cage, and Sean Quirk had atleast 5 goals.

Chico 16 Stanford 7. I have no idea what is up with SMF. They looked great vs. Chico but that must have been a fluke as Chico has beaten both Washington and Cal Poly.

Both sides spent lots of time in the penalty box, refs really weren't letting anything go and it slowed down the game. SFU plays LMU at Poly tomorrow... today's results make me question my previous assumption that SFU will destroy LMU, but I still see a win for the Clan.
