N. Colorado's final consolation game is kaput

The 2013 tournament returns to Greenville, SC this May.

Just curious, and this is an honest question. . .has there EVER been an A division team leave the tournament early and not play one of their consolation games?

I am not condoning what Irvine did, but I was wondering if this has ever been a problem before, being that the consolation games are meaningless.

Lets see.... Calvin drops out after the Div. B tourney field is announced. UC-Irvine leaves early. (Rumor going around is that they did not even want to come to Texas at all either).

How about we drop the entire Div. B Tournament all together?

What about doing a regional playoff for the Division B teams and then take the top 8, two from 4 regions, to the tournament? Would that help?

Keep in mind that UC Irvine is in the middle of their spring quarter so returning for classes might have factored into the team's decision to return early.

Not making excuses, just pointing out a possible factor in their choice.

I know that the Colorado team last year and many teams every year, the seniors miss graduation to play in this tournament. So needing to get back early for spring quater, not that school isn't important, to me is not an excuse. You sign up you play by the rules. Period end of discussion.

We have that already.

It's called MCLA Conference Tournaments.

I believe Tennessee left early one year possibly 2000. My 7 year memory is escaping me, I can not remember if they finished their games or not. All I know is they were staying in the same area and I saw them leave as a team before the tourney was over.

Don't know the exact situation or circumstances BUT I am assuming a couple players (seniors) probably left early to attend graduation as the tourney used to always fall the same weekend as the ceremonies.

Think some VA Tech seniors did the same thing in 2005, but the rest of the team stayed and played its last consolation game.

there was one a team that lost a heartbreaker in the Qtrs-I think in '00 (long long time ago) and failed to show up for their last consolation game. Everyone was pretty much shocked-but then again they never returned again to the tourney so punishments wouldn't have mattered. But that was so long ago that all the details are pretty hazy-there might have been a reason why the whole team left and I may not have been privy to it. But I do remember the other team standing around and asking where their opponents were.

Then why do we have At-Large Bids? The Conference Tournaments determine who is the best in the regions, right? Thus there is no reason for At-large bids at all. We give teams a second chance at nationals through an At-large, an inter-regional 1st round would do the same. Have the national championship tournament be defined as the first round inter-regional game featuring #1A v #2B and #2A v #1B. That way every region gets equal opportunity at nationals but only the best move on - this might be a better way to ensure only the top teams have to travel.

Ok, so I'm being confrontation to make a point. The AQ/At large is one system and the regional 1st round is another. Neither is better than the other, they both have their positives and negatives. What is good about both is when they are appropriately applied based on the needs of the league utilizing them.
