And whether we like it or not, the first poll has an effect on every poll thereafter. If you are unranked in the pre-season poll, it makes it much more difficult to climb the ladder into the National picture.

UNC-Charlotte, for example, flew under the radar for most of the year and many pollsters didn't put them in their poll until very late in the season. Had they started the season out ranked #8, they would almost certainly be in the field this year.

I think this is the point of the discussion because whether you say so or not it does affect how you look at the teams next season. Im not saying GVSU should be in the tourney because our conference is represented well with Dayton but i just think its funny how teams who are ahead of us in the polls remain their after we beat them. Im not looking for a solutution but just giving my opinnion like everyone else here.

I agree with gvlax, they were the first team we played this year, and we lost by 7. Not making excuses, but half of our team had never played in a lacrosse game before... Nonetheless, several other guys and I kept an eye on them in the polls through the season and were always amazed at how low they were ranked (or not even ranked!). Although they did lose to a great Calvin team, they were much better than the PLU team we played against. I know that comparisons are hard, everyone plays a little different everyday, but I do feel that GVSU has deserved to be in the top 25 all season, and they have been under appreciated all season long. I hope that we get to see them again next year.

because it was SJU ranked #1 in the preseason this year, not Montana who finished 4th last year.....

Scooter can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that I could sense a little sarcasm in his post. I think the point that he was trying to make was that it was Montana who was pre-season #1, not SJU, the runner-up last year. While I think that a team's tourney performance does have some effect on the following year's pre-season poll, you also have to take into account other factors for the following year's pre-season poll, such as any key losses/additions to a team.
