A talent pipeline that stretches from Salt Lake City to Towson University doubled in size this season.
And nobody is happier about the strange turn of events than Tigers men's lacrosse Coach Tony Seaman, who plucked two imports from the Utah capital for the 2005 campaign. Both are seeing significant playing time for the Tigers.
Last year, defenseman Matt Mehrer, who previously played at the club level for the University of Utah, was introduced to big-time lacrosse on the East Coast.
This weekend the 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior will split time with Steve Jacobs for the third spot on the backline when the Tigers meet the University of Maryland at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
His fellow Utah native, classmate Kyle Fiat, has made just as big an impression in a shorter time.
Maherer and Fiat were discovered by former Towson resident Mason Goodhand, now the coach at the University of Utah, who told Seaman about the pair.
