Coach of the Year
Will there be a "coach of the year" award this year? If so, Oregon's Joe Kerwin should be selected for this reason: If the national "coach of the year" award is stipulated on a league award, then the PNCLL should give Kerwin, who represents the league, a shot at receiving the national award. Anyway, who else could possibly be selected over Kerwin?

how about the coach of BSU, how might get their team into the playoffs for the first time in the PNCLL? We know joe could coach, we knew it before, does he really need an award for it? I personally think joe wouldn't really care too much about awards for himself if the team is playing meaningful games come May 18-19

Yes, we do have a "coach of the year" award for both the A and B divisions. I think anyone who receives this award should be extremely proud because there have been some excellent coaching jobs this season, and some great coaches who have won this award in the past.

Brauch, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one and agree with Jason. I think Joe should get this award without question. In the 4 or 5 years that Joe has been head coach and co-head coach of the team, I don't believe he has ever won coach of the year. I think it's time that he gets this recognition for the hard work and dedication he has to the program.

The Coach of the Year isn't based on the past 5 years though. I agree that Joe probably could have won it in the past, but this year it's more impressive to take a BSU team with losses to Gonzaga, SFU, OSU and Oregon in 2006 and turn them into a playoff team. I also think Idaho's head coach has done a lot to turn around a struggling program and start what, based on today's performance, could become a very competitive team in the PNCLL.

I thought joe has won it before. Who has won it in the past?

This is the best I can do. . .I don't know from 2000 or before. . .I'm guessing Dan Wishengrad will be able to tell us. . .
2001 Josh Barbour - Oregon (I'm pretty sure here) if not here he won it in 2004
2002 Jason Stockton - PLU
2003 Matt Montag - GU
In 2004, we split into A and B divisions
2004 A Division - I can't recall. . .someone may be able to help me out here
B Division - Kyle Berggren and Kris Johnson - UPS
2005 A Division - Dejon Hush - UW
B Division - Kevin Flynn - Montana
2006 A Division - Mitch Hutchinson - OSU
B Division - Adam Lent - WWU
If anyone could fill in the gaps it would be appreciated. . .and like this thread shows, there have been some phenomenal coaching jobs in both divisions - whoever wins the award should be honored.

Post above has been edited to reflect the correction. . .I meant to put Josh in there, not Joe K. Sorry about the error.

Coach
Joe should get it. Look at the work he did to put together such an impressive schedule, and then prepared his team to not only compete in every game but to win the overwhelming majority of them. Many times, good players can make a coach look real good, no matter how good they really are. Oregon's players are really good, but it is clear that Joe has taken them and led them to achieve things only possible with a great coach.
Additionally though, I think people should also give a lot of credit to Ryan and those who help him at Idaho. I think the progress Idaho has made in one year is evidence of the hard work and instruction. I know the Idaho Squad didn't real in the W's or anything, but when you break down jobs done by coaches, it is important to see what they accomplished with their respective teams.
Both Ryan and Joe did impressive things with their teams. Joe has the luxury of great players, and he made the most of them and done a great job leading them to the top. At the same time, Ryan has a young group of learning players, but he too has made the most of them as he has led them to great improvement and they are poised to compete well next year.
They are both deserving of a lot of praise on their solid work this year especially.
Cheers.

To get a little discussion on the B division coach of the year I’ll throw out my thoughts. It has to be Mark Brown from Southern Oregon or Peter Lewicki from Whitman or both. Southern has had small numbers all year; take in the injuries and loss of top scorer Jamison Whitehead were playing with 12-14 guys. Now he has this team in the Final Four for the second strait year, two years in our three-year existence. Peter has done one heck of a job there filling in for the dean, Being a student and playing can be hard yet alone being a law student in a different city and getting that team in to the playoffs, you have to take your hat off to both of these guys.

Jesse Savage over at WWU deserves some serious consideration. This guy is a player who decided to step up and coach after WWU's head coach quit. To do this, sacrificing his own playing career so that his teammates could is very admirable. WWU has also done one heck of a good job this season.

Give it to Joe then, why not? I just thought he had won it before.
