2007 PNCLL All-Stars
With the regular season about to come to a close and the playoffs just around the corner, what do people think both the A and B All-Star teams should look like? Personally I think you have to have a lot of the Oregon guys on there for the A division, but I am a little biased. Julian is leading the league in points and that is after playing the top competition in the country, but Clayton is hot on his tail. Also P$ in cage is leading the league in all categories in cage. In the B division I think there could be more debate on who should be 1st through 3rd team with so many of the teams as a whole doing very well this year. It has been a great regular season for the entire PNCLL, and good luck to all in the playoffs and all-star voting!

Not sure about the defensive players, but as far as offensive players goes, there really shouldn't be anyone except oregon and simon fraiser players. for the first team there probably won't be too may surprises.
Attack
coffman - he's great, nothing really else to say
christians - is he still an attack? either way he'll be first team
knope
towner - both have had great seasons
Middie
christians?
tesar - hasn't had a bad season yet, real tough on the ball
crowley - fantastic shot, having a great freshman year
mckinney - pretty clutch player, helped his team out a lot

Attack:
Andy Young WWU- The guy is the heart of their offense, he can move very well, distributes the ball well and makes great decisions.
Cody Hart AIC- We didnt play Albertson this year but after playing them last year and seeing the numbers he put up again this year, he definitely deserves to make 1st team this year.
Hall, Ault, or Cameron Montana- Its hard to choose between these three, all of them probably deserve 1st team honors but there just isnt enough spots for all 3.
Midfield:
Peter Drake, Whitman
Jake Schuit/Reid Anderson, WWU
Matt Weurffel LSM, PLU
Defense:
Baumstark, WWU
Jeff Roark, PLU
Kellen Gallacher, CWU
Goalie:
Noah Symington, WWU

No Southern guys huh.......we only have the top 2 scorers in the league, 3 guys in the top 10 in the NATION, and Mr. Dan Snell. Our schedule was tough and most of it on the road........

In the A division, I think that if the All-star votes were based on talent and talent only, Oregon's first line of middies would get a sweep. Obviously I'm biased, and my brother is one of those guys, but if you were to pick your three best middies Tesar, Warren and Cody would be the one's you would want without question. However, all star voting being the way it is, at the very very least Tesar and Warren are first team.
At defense, at the very least Jolly deserves it. I've seen him improve tremendously during his four years at UofO to become the dominant force that he is today. Carpenter deserves to be in this group. Also, I would put Vinny in here from UofO.
As far as attack goes, Julian is the MVP of the league. Knope has had a great year so far. Christians deserves some mention with this group as well. Also, I think you have to look at Clayton from OSU. He's had some solid years with the beavers and deserves a lot of credit for playing the dual role of player/coach.

To answer the unnamed indivdual from Southern, if we look at where those big numbers are coming from, one can see that a huge number of those are blowouts against unranked teams.
I am not denying Whitehead's dominance; I remember both of our run-ins with him last year. However, I do believe that there are many stronger line-to-line middies in the B division. Numbers aren't everything.

We havent played you guys this year, and i havent seen you guys play personally, so i had nothing to go off of for you guys. I remember Snell from last year, and yes he is definitely 1st team material. most teams in the league played 8-11 regular season games, and you guys had the opportunity to play 14, increasing the odds of having multiple scorers at the top of the league, much like us last year. PPG is a more accurate measuring stick than total points, and like Steno said, defense is also apart of the game for middies. Congrats on a great season, seems like you guy are a deep and balanced squad this year. Good luck in the playoffs.

We did play more games, but our games were no cakewalk (Cal, UC Davis, WWU, Montana, Whitman, WOU, Dominican), and yes PPG is a good statistic when everyone plays an equal amount of games, but it is harder to keep your PPG average up when you play 14 games opposed to 8. When you play more games you need to be consistent rather than having 3 or four monster games. All of the players mentioned are definitely high level players, and I am most certainly not trying to take anything away from them. I just found it amusing that nobody from Southern Oregon was mentioned.

Attack is always the hardest All-Conference Team to make, with many players that put up big numbers but get overlooked. I'm not sure any of my Grizzlies (Cameron at 50 pts, then 34,33,& 32 pts respectively for the rotation) put up big enough numbers this year for the first team, but all certainly play at that level. In my opinion, Andy Young is the Offensive MVP for the B division this year... outside of that it's anyone's game for the first team attack, all I know is even the honorable mention guys can play.
At midfield it's pretty tough as well. Teams with lower numbers here have individuals that put up big numbers, but I really like to look for guys that are more of the complete package... good riders, defenders, etc. in addition to being able to put the ball in the back of the net. Drake is one that stands out here, along with a few Vikings, but again it's pretty much a toss up.
At the face off it's McCarthy from Montana (sorry, not just bias) and Suyehira from Albertson. Although there are several other guys that are very capable here, these two seem to stand out... from my observations. At the LSM, the only one that comes to mind is Wuerffel.
This year I thought that defenders and goalies were the hardest to vote for. I think Snell is the defensive MVP of this league hands down... outside of that I really didn't know where to go. There weren't really any defenders that stood above the rest, plenty of solid guys, just no stand outs. As for goalies, I guess it depends on the game because there are a ton of guys that look good.
These are just a few of my observations but all in all the talent gap is certainly closing some, congratulations to all the guys who have put up a good season this spring... I'm starting to get really bummed that this is my last year of eligibility...

As far as first team all-americans go. . .I think Miller (3rd team '06) and Coffman (2nd team '06) both have a very legit shot at first team all-american. With the overall performance of the Ducks this year, I think we might actually see our league get the individual accolades that are typically reserved for players from the perennial powerhouses.
In the B division it is very difficult to get a first team all-american unless they have been watched at Nationals. Honestly, I think Townsend Hall (3rd team in '06) is probably our league's best hope for a first teamer - or if Ault or Cameron go off in Texas we could see one of them on the list. . .if Bagley had played all year (1st team last year) I think he would have had been there as well. I also think Weurfful of PLU (2nd teamer last year) has a legit shot, but PLU's chances of a trip to nationals at this point are slim at best. If WWU can find their way to Nationals, I think you'll definitely see Andy Young and Noah Symington on the list - Noah made the AA team last year without even playing in Texas. If the MCLA board sees him play, he'll have a shot at first team this year.
Just my take on the AA list. . .

Way to go out on a limb with your picks. Why don't we just send the all-star jerseys to the entire Oregon squad so you guys can stop wasting everyone's time with your "picks."
The difference between Oregon players/alums and everyone else in the PNCLL is that at least everyone else makes an effort to be objective when it comes to discussions like this one. Yes, Oregon is extremely talented in many respects, but to say that 9 out of 11 guys on the PNCLL all-star team all come from Oregon is to give short shrift to the excellent players who play for other teams. Personally, I find it to be disrespectful.
I don't know all the players out there who deserve to be named all-stars this year, but I'm pretty sure 85% of them don't come from U of O.

I'm pretty sure that Oregon swept all in conference competition and had the best showing in OOC games. Not only do they have point some of the leading point scorers, but also have some of the best position players who do not get credit statistically. When I saw them play against BYU they clearly had an extremely solid defense starting with their goalie, but also had a great line of Middies and clearly the top attack in the league. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, but clearly a line must be drawn between envy and reality. Oregon's record is proof enough, then they deserve the accolades that come with winning play. I guess I will just agree to disagree, but as an outsider to the PNCLL I might not have the best ability to judge the top competition, but from a national perspective it looks like Oregon's team should fill most of the PNCLL 1st team All Star selections.
