Yes, publishing the pictures does give this guy a voice, but for every kid who thinks this guy is cool, there is probably 1000 others who think, guns are pretty stupid, and this guy is simply a coward.
Even if 99% of the public are totally outraged by this act, it only takes one nut to do something like this! For that one guy, news media sources have made this guy a poster boy of attention.
I think the U of M heard from that one percent with the bomb threat.
I would not stick my head in the sand and hope for the best. The news media didn't do this, Mr. Hui did.
To make sure I understand you, the media is sensationlizing the murder of 32 people?
Sensationalize: To cast and present in a manner intended to arouse strong interest, especially through inclusion of exaggerated or lurid details
I guess if you consider his image with a gun in his hand lurid. Or is it his pathetic attempt to make himself known, if even in infamy?
His video and images are disturbing, but so were the images of the Twin Towers collapsing. I recall video of one student jumping out the window of Columbine High School that was also hard to watch. I am glad that I had the stomach to watch it, because I know more.
I guess I'm trying to understand what the media's role in relation to this tragedy should be. I don't think there are too many people who think this kid is a hero as a result of his face being on the news. At least anyone who is not already outside reality. Therefore, I think getting the facts out in context takes precedence over any potential harm. The damage was done by Mr. Hui, and the fifty bullets he fired in to his peers.
So were the people below influenced by NBC? Even if they were, does getting the truth out not outwieght the potential harm? Do we really want to allow crazy people to define us?
