SELC: 4/11 - 4/17 (Discuss Games/Report Scores)

Postby Hugh Nunn on Tue Apr 17, 2007 7:18 pm

Given the continuing trend of parity in the conference and the league, tie breakers will take on more and more importance every year. I'm sure that Buff and the SELC Executive Board would be willing to hear any ideas to streamline the process in September at the SELC meeting.

But for now, any argument is just a waste of time. The tournament field is just too evenly matched this year to be worrying about more then the next game.

Wish I could be there to see it. It's going to be awesome.

the game won't be rescheduled.

The 6 seeds for the Div. B tournament are:
Emory
SCAD
Eckerd
Furman
UNC-Charlotte
Elon

Seedings will be announced late on Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

The question is, if Furman loses to Charlotte, what would be the tiebreaker between Furman and Eckerd at 3-2?

goals against

Postby fsucoach on Tue Apr 17, 2007 9:07 pm

Goals against is not necessarily a good tiebreaker. From a coaching prospective I would rather play all of my players as much as possible without being concerned that if I play my bench I will be jeopardizing my seeding.

B-League

Postby CoachDuVall on Wed Apr 18, 2007 8:41 am

...all i know is Emory is a number one

Really? What's the tie-breaker between Emory and UNCC if we beat Furman tonight and end up 5-0 as well?

I also have to agree with what someone said a few posts up. We've made it our business to get our less experienced players into games once we're up a comfortable margin rather than run the score up. Using goals scored as such a critical tie-breaker seems to encourage bad-sportsmanship. Southern Virginia came down to Charlotte and played us with only 10 guys. We'd have been amazingly bad sports if we'd left our starters in and run the score up as much as we could. But if we lose a tiebreaker with Emory (or anyone else) because we didn't put an extra 5 goals or whatever in on SVU, then we're essentially being punished for being good sports to the other team.

I know there isn't anything that can be done about it now and the rules are the rules... but I think that come September at the league meeting, that has to be on the agenda.

i'm almost certain that this is why the league does and has always used "goals against"

holding a team to the lowest amount of goals possible is never considered unsportsmanlike.

Thank you for that clarification... Everyone has just been saying "goals" and that seemed to imply goals scored (to me anyway.)

Goals against makes a lot more sense and certainly doesn't have the sportsmanship issues that goals scored would.

Yes, really. I mean look at the Goals for and Against. Emory has 20 more than you guys and 3 less. Unless you beat a #4 Furman team into the ground, I think it is safe to say that Emory is #1 as of now. (mcla.us for the stats). Not taking anything away from Charlotte Lacrosse, but according to the stats and what I've seen of that Emory team. Just look at the schedule comparison as well. Emory's played defending champs Eckerd, beat them pretty well as well as returning playoff contendors SCAD. SO if you think my statements were wrong, just look at the stats.

I don't know what anyone is arguing about. Let the games do the talking. UNCC looks like a scary team to play though, heard they have a good attackmen and a nasty pole who ran threw the SCAD kid healy.

The tie breaker between Emory and UNCC would be Goals against...

(again, this is hypothetical, we do have to beat a VERY good Furman team tonight before this is anything more than academic...)

...how does that work. Is it the goals against in the 5 qualifying games only?

SO if you think my statements were wrong, just look at the stats.

I wasn't being combative or argumentative by the way... I'm sincerely interested in how the various scenario's play out. Regardless or how the seeding works out, the B-league tournament is going to be brutal.

sorry i thought you were for a sec. Sorry about that coach. And I do agree, both tournaments are going to be insane. I've yet to see you guys play, but from the play I've seen so far out of scad, eckerd, emory, matchups are going to be pretty good. As for A-league. ANYTHING is possible. Any one of these teams has a fair and decent shot at winning it. Northview seems to always play as a great neutral site for some great lacrosse. I know I'll be there early for the GT-FSU matchup, sure to be an awesome game
