2007 UMLL Tiebreakers

Postby Rob Graff on Mon Apr 16, 2007 12:44 pm

This is long, but give it a chance:

Here are the By law tiebreakers:

Ÿ 6.4.1 Ties for a seeding shall be broken by the following criteria in this order:

Ÿ 6.4.1.1 Head to head record.

Ÿ 6.4.1.2 Goals allowed in head to head games.

Ÿ 6.4.1.3 Goals allowed in the UMLL season.

Ÿ 6.4.1.4 Coin toss.

NOTE - For the B division - Because there are so many unplayed games, the scenarios cannot be published with any certainty. ALSO NOTE - that conf. winning percentage will determine seeding order if not all B division games are played. If a tie exists, the above tiebreakers shall be used.

DIVISION A Scenarios/Assumptions/Conclusions

FIRST - UWSP is out of the league tournament for this year because they do not have 3 OOC games.

SECOND: ST. OLAF/UofM and UMD ARE IN. All have 3 or more wins in conf. Remaining games will determine seeding for #1/2/3/4 (SCSU could be #3 if they win all 3 games [4 wins 3 losses and head to head with St. Olaf (but only if St. Olaf only wins one more game, if STO wins 2 games they cannot be lower than #3 (they'll have 5 wins)) - UofM has 5 wins, UMD has 5 wins in conf, thus neither can be lower than #3.]

THIRD: Under all Scenarios I run below, ISU and MARQUETTE are IN the tournament, but their seeding varies. That IS NOT THE CASE FOR Mankato/SCSU Their games this weekend determine which of them go to the tourney.

FOURTH: If SCSU wins more than one game, they are in the tournament regardless.

In short - the following Division A scenarios exist.

CASE 1: ASSUMPTIONS:

St. Cloud wins one of three, and has a 2-5 record:

Mankato Beats UWSP

All 4 teams are 2-5. Head to head does not define the order (i.e. no one team has beaten all others.)

Next - goals allowed in head to head games - least goals is highest seed.

By my count, ISU let in 14 (combined) v. Marq/MSU/SCSU --Marquette let in 23 (combined) v. SCSU/ISU/MSU, Mankato let in 24 and SCSU let in 28.

Under this scenario SCSU is out and other 3 are in. Seeding 1-3 is the top 3, 4 is ISU, 5 is Marq and 6 is Mankato

CASE 2: ASSUMPTIONS:

St Cloud Loses all three.

Mankato loses to UWSP

2 teams at 1-6 - SCSU has the tie break - they beat Mankato head to head. Mankato is out. SCSU is the #6 seed and plays the #3 first round

2 teams at 2-5 - Marquette has tie break - they beat ISU head to head. Marquette is 4 and ISU is 5. They play each other first round

CASE 3: ASSUMPTIONS:

St. Cloud Wins one of three leaving them at 2-5

USWP beats Mankato, leaving Mankato at 1-6

Mankato is out.

3 teams at 2-5 - SCSU/MARQ/ISU - first tiebreaker (head to head) solves this

Marquette beat SCSU and ISU. They are the #4 seed.

ISU beat SCSU. ISU is the #5 seed

SCSU is the #6 seed

CASE #4: ASSUMPTIONS

St. Cloud Loses all three, leaving them at 1-6. They are out. Tie breaker used to seed remaining teams.

Mankato Beats UWSP - leaving them at 2-5, tied with ISU/Marquette. Head to Head does not resolve the tie because no 1 team beat other two teams:

Goals Against tiebreaker - ISU has 8, is #4 seed. Marq has 13, is #5 seed. Mankato has 15, is #6 seed.

CASE #5: ASSUMPTIONS:

SCSU wins 2 of 3 - they are 3-4. They are in. UMD is In, UofM is In. St. Olaf is In. Seeding depends on who beats who.

Mankato wins. Tied with ISU/Marquette - No Head to head (see Case #4). Goals against Tiebreaker moves Mankato out due to goals against.

CASE #6 Assumptions

SCSU wins 2 of 3 - they are 3-4 and a minimum they are the 4th seed (if St.O did not win another game, they would be the #4 and SCSU would be the #3). As noted above, UMD is in, UofM is in. St. Olaf is In. Seeding depends on who beats who.

Mankato loses to UWSP - they are out with a 1-6 record.

ISU/Marquette - Marquette is #5, ISU is #6 based upon head to head.

Coach Graff,

How many teams make the tournament this year? Thank you for all the work you do for the league and setting up these scenarios.

Aw, c'mon, where's the super-fun "Team A is in if Team B goes 1-for-3, Team C goes 2-for-3 with one of the wins against Team Q, Team D goes 0-for2, and Team A beats Team E by 29 goals"?

Tex:

A division - At the Fall meeting the # of playoff spots were decreased to 6 of 8 teams. #1 and #2 seeds get a bye first round. 3 v. 6 and 4 v. 5 in first round on Friday.

B division kept their tourney at 8 teams.
