Well that basically sums up everything I've been thinking since I started playing organized sports.

But like I said...your position in sports isn't always performance-based (see: Chan Gailey, Michael Vick).

While I agree that white athletes receive an inordinate amount of abuse from the media, particularly white basketball players from some of the so-called journalists on ESPN and TNT, I disagree with the basic premise of this caste sports group. Sports is one of the true meritocracies in this country. This fact is at the very core of why sports leagues were for the most part far ahead of the rest of the country in terms of integration, my beloved Red Sox being an unfortunate exception among others.

It is profitable for sports franchises to win and thus, owners have a financial motivation to put the best product on the field regardless of race. This is just as true in college as the pros though there can be extenuating circumstances, i.e. academic requirements (obviously not always applicable). Given that fact alone, the idea that coaches who's job it is to win games would exclude a worthy white athlete over a black athlete is suspect at best.

I would think that a more plausible explanation of the dearth of white athletes is that on the whole, whites have more opportunities than blacks. While whites make up the majority of people beneath the poverty line in this country, a higher percentage of blacks are poor. Many may find sports to be the only escape from the lower classes, though some like Pac Man decide to bring the lower class with them. Granted this is speaking in general terms but I believe it to be valid. Sports is not just about God given talent. There are many choices that a person must make along the way that will decide if they will be successful athletes. One of those choices is how hard and often one practices and I tend to think someone who's only perceived chance to escape poverty is through sports would be inclined to work harder at sports than an equally talented individual who has other prospects.

Why can't all contrary beliefs be written with the class that Stryker did in his above post???

While it is a fact that major sports programs have it in their best interest to win...they don't always do what us MMQB's would prefer them to do. Just as the coaching situations, wouldn't it also in the company's best interest to have the best coach?

I agree that massive politics do exist in those avenues, but politics do also exist in the recruiting world for players (or coaches) as well. Since the head coach isn't always the one going to the high school games checking out the players. It's the scouts, and high school coaches themselves that have the power to promote their players. While I may not ever have been passed up for a position on a team due to anything of that nature...that doesn't mean I didn't specifically see it happen countless times...as have many people Ive talked to.

The kid has skills and will play big time college football somewhere.

He appears to be just an athlete

His line was very good, but he was making a lot of people miss.

Full back was a pretty stout lead blocker as well.

well, maybe he'll end up at UTA, oh wait......they dont play football.

That was an unecessary shot. I also think it is pretty retarded that we have one of the largest Public Schools in Texas and can't support a football team...

Even if we did, no chance that kid would go to UTA when he can be a Horn or an Aggie. Maybe that's the reason we don't have football... UTA is still a little lacking in School spirit and tradition and campus life

At this point I would like to take this time to apologize for my remarks earlier. It was a poor use of word and I apologize to any one who took offense to this. God has taught me better than that, forgiveness is all that I ask.

Is this the largest school-size in Texas? I am not familiar with the strength by size there...but is it safe to assume that this is largest school sizes, and the best? Or no?

In Texas, we have 5 classifications starting with 5A going down to 1A. Each classification is based on, I think, average daily attendance plus the total student population at the high school. For example, I am guessing the cut-off for classifying a high school as a 5A if the total high school student population is above 1,930. If a school ends up with 1,927 students, it would be classified as a 4A. Of course, I am not sure of the exact cut-off figures for each classification. For many years, Waco High School has been a 5A school, but it was dropped to 4A because of its student population went below the 5A level. However, not all sports in Texas would follow the 5A classifications, for instance, football and basketball at the high schools would be classified at 5A, etc.

The athletic programs at those high schools in TX are governed by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). Every two years, UIL would do the reclassification/realignment process to move up or move down high schools based on the 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A classification cut-off numbers.

I'm sure some guys from TX who are on this message board may chime in to add to what I just said or correct me.

In fact, I have never been to a six-man football game in Texas, but I've heard that it is really fun to watch the running backs dart around the blocks. Last fall, someone gave me the link to watch an Abbott defender really put a major hit on a running back at MaxPreps. That guy really flew high in the air.

No one seemed to chime in yet and I went to school at Cy-Fair's rival (Cy-Creek) in HS. The schools in Cy-Fair ISD are 5A...or as Brent said the largest size that we have there. And Brent if you want to see some 6-man football in Texas just head out to the panhandle.

Looks like Sam is getting looks from some of the big programs. Judging by some of his quotes he sounds like an incredibly intelligent young man.

I always love recruiting pictures for Rivals/Scout. They always put their fists under their muscles to push them up. I swear every other recruiting profile has this same picture.
