Denver Outlaws Tryouts

Denver Outlaws Tryouts

Postby onpoint on Mon Apr 02, 2007 3:27 pm

Went down and checked out the open tryouts for the Denver Outlaws this weekend. Overall I was disappointed in the turnout (only 38 came), but there were some good showings by guys from our level. Mark Plonkey (CSU) and Walker Bateman (BYU/UVSC) stood out as did Alan Smith? (from UNC) - a big, physical defenseman. I think they will announce who makes it to training camp here in the next couple of days.

How much did it cost to tryout Alex?

One of the complaints I've heard is that some MLL teams are using tryouts as a way to raise some extra revenue.

I think $75. But that includes a season ticket, which is already a deal if you look at it from a monetary standpoint, especially if they are going to take five players. Why not take the chance? I doubt there were five that particularly caught the eye of anyone (maybe more like two or three), but that was the chance for people who ever wanted one.

Of course it is a way to make some extra revenue, but I believe that they truly wanted to see if there was anyone else that could play. Local players are a hot commodity for these western teams and if guys can hang and they don't have to pay to fly them in every week, they are going to have a good shot.

Alan Smith is the coach at unc right now and he has been working his butt off before and after practices, aswell as putting the pads on and playing. I hope that he makes the roster i think that he has a good chance.

Alan Smith made training camp. Unfortunately, the other two did not . . .

Alex, in an article I just read on Lax.com regarding the tryouts, it said there were about 37 guys who showed up, including one guy who said he hadn't played in four years. Is there any criteria for these tryouts regarding experience? Personally, just to be able to try-out for the team would be a pretty cool experience. C'mon Seattle! :D
