Where is the defense? There seems to be a lot of wide open looks at the cage on both ends.

I'll ask. He's mentioned botched rides a few times.

From the sounds of it, 2 of the ASU goals came as 4v3 fast breaks.

Jason calls...

ASU calls time out with 15 seconds left in the first. #15 Ryan Westfall drives & feeds #22 backside (also Westfall) for the goal. Miller wins the face. 8-0 for Miller. Scott picked up 6 of them himself.

ASU is capitalizing on their possessions, Oregon is just throwing it away. Jason's guessing 8 unforced turnovers.

4-3 ASU at the end of the first.

Jason laughs at Where's the defense, & says everything has been unsettled except for the last one. The Oregon ride looks great, but once they get through they're just getting behind the poles.

Miller wins the face to start the second period.

Procedure call takes it away from Oregon, & gives ASU the possession.

Ducks save, Trevor Tesar goes coast to coast for the goal.

4-4.

Miller LOSES the face. ASU can't clear it, Aldrich scores on the empty net.

5-4 Ducks, Miller wins the face.

Word on the street is the Ducks passing is still sloppy. Coffman picks up a ground ball & feeds the crease... ball dropped... ASU possession. Any bets on when Jason calls next?

Jason's a Doctor, go see him, he's at the field... probably the guy on the phone at the top of the Oregon defensive box...

ASU is switching from a 2-2-2 to a 1-4-1 & back for some nice looks. Nicest goal he's scene in a long time is a diving quick stick for ASU, but it's waived off for landing in the crease.

Oregon clears, but throws it away.

"ASU is clearing much better now, wait, no wonder it was easy, offsides ASU."

Blackmoore scores for the Ducks on the crease, feed from Knope. A fast restart from the Ducks got this goal in transition.

#18 ASU Savino beats his defender, late slide leads to an underhand crank shot & unassisted goal for ASU.

Miller wins the face.

Warren clears for the Ducks, feeds Blackmoore sneaking, goal Ducks. Late hit ASU, no face, Oregon is EMO in their 3-3.

Is anyone playing defense out there? It sounds to me like the score of this game is going to be 20-19 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th :P

By the way, these updates are awesome. It is like listening to play-by-play on the radio.

7-5 at this point, I don't know what happened on the EMO yet. Jason says no score board so he'll have to walk around the field to find out but will check at the half to make sure we're on the same page.

Jason's laughing the whole time. It cracks me up. I'm waiting for the, "Kyle, how come you were never this good?" (I played for Jason in college).

Last comment I heard from him was, "Oh, Oregon throws it away again. No, they got lucky, ASU tipped it."

Brett Retallick is playing middie, went to X with his short, ISO, goal Ducks.

ASU goalie is fantastic right now, clearing, picking up gbs, one of the quickest guys on the field & involved in everything he can.

I asked for him to let me know when one team goes zone & he said no way. Both of these teams want to score 20. They're not playing for possession, they're just taking it to the cage.

This helter-skelter run'n'gun style of play which seems to be happening today is entertaining, but is not usually successful in the national tourney. Sooner or later there has to be some focus on defense. Just look at the teams who made the championship game the last 5-6 years. All of them had very good defenses.

Maybe I am nitpicking (and maybe this belongs in another section of the forum), but it seems that there is a lot of confusion about what constitutes "winning the faceoff". It doesn't really matter which faceoff guy wins the draw, it's all about which team gains possession in the offensive end. Here's the language from the 2007 NCAA rulebook:

Faceoff—The standard of faceoff statistics is to award the faceoff to the
faceoff specialist (when his team gains possession of the ball), regardless
of whether he actually gained possession himself. A faceoff should
be awarded to a team only when it gets a clear offensive or defensive
opportunity out of the play.

The rulebook goes on to state that even if Team A faceoff guy gains possession of the ball, he doesn't win the faceoff unless Team A controls the ball on the offensive end. If he gets stripped and Team B is the first to control the ball on offense than Team B faceoff guy "wins the faceoff".

The reason I bring this up is because I am interested in knowing which team is "winning the faceoff" and not just which player won the initial draw. I could be wrong, but it just seems that people have different definitions of winning the faceoff. Of course, this is especially important in this game because we have all heard about the dominance of UO's Miller this season.
