The 2013 tournament returns to Greenville, SC this May.

Dallas nationals - based on 3/07 poll

Postby DG on Fri Mar 16, 2007 6:47 pm

I recognize up front that I'm ignoring the AQs in this process, but I thought it was interesting...

First round matchups:

1 Oregon
16 Florida

7 Colorado
10 California Santa Barbara

5 Minnesota - Duluth
12 Cal Poly SLO

4 Colorado State
13 Arizona State

3 Michigan
14 Utah

6 Sonoma State
11 Arizona

9 Northeastern
8 Florida State

2 Brigham Young
15 Lindenwood

2nd Round matchups (if seedings hold):

1 Oregon
7 Colorado

5 Minnesota - Duluth
4 Colorado State

3 Michigan
6 Sonoma State

8 Florida State
2 Brigham Young

What an amazingly difficult 1st and 2nd round...

Actuially giving effect to the AQs only changes one position, Florida drops out and Texas A & M goes in. All the other AQs are rated in the Top 16. It's been a long time since that has been the case.

Also, the 8-9 game faces 1-16 while 7-10 plays 2-15.

Edited 2nd Round matchups (if seedings hold):

1 Oregon
8 Florida State

5 Minnesota - Duluth
4 Colorado State

3 Michigan
6 Sonoma State

7 Colorado
2 Brigham Young

That puts Northeastern, UCSB and AZ out on Day 1! No more easy trips to the final 4...

It doesn't work out that way very often. UCSB has been in the final four every year they have been in the tournament regardless of their seed. Just shows what a difference experience makes.

SB got to the final four every year because they had the Berkeley connection. Without anyone from Berkeley on their team now....i dont know how far they'll go.... Oregon on the other hand....

I was thinking the same thing, but the SI and O'dowd guys will think otherwise.

Forgive me if I sound crude, but it seems like you all are trying to make it easier than normal to advance in the tournament. The point of elimination is to end up with the best of the best. There should be no giveaway games, or pitting two even teams in the first round. To give a div. B example, st. johns was blown away by san diego 10 to 3. St. johns didn't even score in the 2nd half. A better final would have been against claremont or montana. It would have been much more even. The point is, you're never gonna get the best matchups in the championship with doing it by a poll.

I think 8-7 Finals for 3 years running is pretty darn good games if you ask me, but that is just my opinion

Not to mention 6-4 and 13-10(?) the two year's previous. The last final that was not in doubt was in 2001. I'm thinking the current system is about as good as it gets.

I think I see your point, but on the B side the poll is often out of whack due to the limited ammount of OOC games throughout the season. Also, I think St. Johns beat Claremont in the regular season, didn't they?

St. John's lost to Claremont, but beat San Diego in the regular season.

I can understand that losing by 7 isn't a close game, but if you play through 3 teams to make it to the championship, I don't know how you can say a poll put the team there. I think if you win three games in three days at nationals, you have the right to play in the championship.

My point is exactly the opposite. This tournament is getting tougher every year, and there are no more easy games in the quarterfinals. In past years, there have been "giveaway" games, even in the quarters.
