FSU Going D I next year...

I have heard from a reliable source that FSU has the money and has got the move approved by the school to move to D I next year. Could this be related to all these top name coaches agreeing to come down and coach for FSU? See a pattern building here?

if this is true it is only great news. what a place to play to if your a young prospect not getting looks by the top cream teams. warm weather, great football, hot girls, ok academics. what more could you ask for???

Likely they will go D1, but over the course of less than a year is unlikely....it will be a 2-3 year transition

ya....ok....D1 in one year without any recruiting class? Absolutely not. FSU would never put their school, their brand, in a predicament like that. Enter a D1 sport w/o one recruit?? Would be plain stupid. It wouldn't be any earlier then 2009 or 2010. Seems these days everyone has a reliable source. When your reliable source is a press release I'll believe you.

I think if FSU goes D-I they will do fine when it comes to recruiting. I don't think FSU will be a second choice when it comes to recruits as you allude to. They will compete with any program in my opinion.

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but a thought just occurred to me. Hypothetically, the MCLA and the lack of recruiting/scholarship rules provide the perfect environment for a college to put in place a team in preparation for a move to varsity...not to mention a pool of quality teams to play building up to that transition.
I agree with Evan that '09-10 is more a more likely timetable for any move at the earliest. As for coaches, I would be a bit surprised if there weren't an effort to get a big name coach to start the program that would be yet another of the reasons for recruits to make the easy call and avoid the snow of the early season. I can almost guarrantee that mid-winter recruiting visits would pay dividends.

Im here and i haven't heard anything about this. I don't know who this reliable source is but i haven't heard anything from the team about this and i would have. Its hasn't been in the paper nor has the school said anything about it. I believe it is highly unlikly with in the next few years but almost certain in the next decade.

And with all due respect to their current coaches, a few former D1 players are not what the school would shoot for in terms of "big name" coaches. An athletic department of FSU's caliber would be looking for big names like Gait, Tierney, Seamen, Urick, etc. FSU would want to make the biggest splash possible to begin attracting top recruits from Day One.

And as an aside, all of the current club players would be out of a team...

While FSU may ANNOUNCE such a move in the coming year, as others have noted it would state that this would be effective in '09/'10. This would be similar to Adrian College here in Michigan which announced it was forming a D3 program, the inaugural season to be three years out.
While this was done to help enrollment, Adrian does not have the drawing power of FSU.

Well eventually when FSU does go DI...what is to become of the current team? Obviously they cannot be in the SELC due to rules...but will the team continue? Would there be enough support?

I suppose they could join the NCLL but that would be geographically difficult since there aren't any NCLL teams near them. They would probably become more like the Vermont Clubs and UMass Clubs of up north, whom, until recently, were basically independent and just scheduled games every year without any post season possibilities.

i would hope the MCLA XC would consider some sort of 'grandfather claus' since there is no actual formal agreement with the NCAA coaches and ''we were here first'' at FSU.

I would be really surprised for this to come out of the blue the way everyone seems to think. As far as i know there has been no discussion of such a move much less a decision. The school just signed a bunch of high profile football coach and is paying off an old offensive coordinator. I don't think the atheltic department would feel we would have the money or the support of the boosters in a down year like we have been having. The focus at the school has been to get the football team back up and the party rep. gone. Plus with the whole duke scandal lax hasn't really had a good name and probably doesn't have much play with the boosters who are unfamiliar with it. No matter how much i wish the team would go d1 i think talking about it is all hype. I do know that the idea of a team has been openly supported by the AD, and even Bobby Bowden. But the plate seems a little too full right now for the school to take it on.
