Penalty-caused loose ball goal?

Postby WaterBoy on Mon Mar 19, 2007 5:18 am

Just as a hypothetical-

Team A is on offense, and A1 drives to the goal with possession. B1 performs an illegal body check on A1, causing them to drop the ball in front of the cage.

Scenario 1- Ball, after falling out of A1's crosse, bounces into the goal without contacting another player.

Scenario 2- Without bouncing or touching another player, the ball passes through the plane of the goal.

Scenario 3- Without touching the ground, ball bounces off the keeper and into the goal.

My question is ultimately whether there can be a goal scored as a result of penalty knocking a ball loose, or whether the play is dead as soon as the ball touches the ground. Then, if the ball does not touch the ground, but passes through the plane of the goal, is it a goal?

The third scenario is asking whether a penalty that knocks the ball loose is a dead play upon only striking the ground, or whether another player can cause a stop to play.

Essentially- is the play dead when the ball is loose? Or what is the deciding factor.

Since this is a CollegeLax Forum I am assuming we're playing under NCAA rules. As you know, a couple of seasons ago the rules were changed on penalties so that under a flag down slow whistle, if possession is lost inside the attack box the officials will hold their whistle until one of the following occurs;
* Goal is scored
* the ball goes outside the box or out of bounds
* the offense commits a foul
* the defense gains possession
* there is an injury
* someone loses a piece of required equipment

So in your cases, all would be considered a GOAL! Even if A2 was to pick up the loose ball and toss it in it would be a goal.
Remember also that what normally might be a loose-ball technical that just grants possession becomes time-serving in this situation. In other words, if the D commits a loose ball push during the FDSW in the attack box, that becomes a time-serving penalty as well.

Okay- it was probably cleared up, but I know last year there was some disagreement about the wording of the rule, which stated something to the effect of a penalty that caused a dropped ball would stop the play. I don't know if that was amended, but that was how I read the rule and saw it used last season.

I cleaned up the language and submitted some A.R.s on this, which were accepted by the NCAA rules committee and included in the rule book this year. The condition for stopping play is now the ball touching the ground outside the attack area, and the reference to "and the act of fouling does not cause the player to lose possession" has been deleted. See NCAA Rule 7-8 and the accompanying A.R.s.

Just missed my cue.
