If anyone didn't see UMD nearly beat Colorado State today. According to the posts UMD looked real good and represented the UMLL well. Good luck the rest of the way. I hope you guys beat BYU and Utah.

Does anyone else think its a little rediculous to congradulate teams that ALMOST won a game? A win is a win and a loss is a loss, anyway you slice it. There is too much talk in these forums about scores and who only beat who by 1 or 2 goals. it doesnt matter if you win by 20 or 1, you won the game. The only people it may matter to are people who are just looking to get a story or the pollsters and if the pollsters are true, smart, lacrosse savy guys than they shouldnt really look at that stat all that much either. Im sure UMD is great this year but i can also tell you that right now while they sit in their locker room they wouldnt want to hear "great job guys, you only lost by 1!"

No, I for one don't think it's ridiculous to congratulate a team for a very well played game against a team that has been a perennial top 5 power. Yes, the Bulldogs lost, by one, after tieing the game and losing the goal for a crease violation.
While I'm sure there is some disappointment, the UMD Bulldogs can hold their heads high - they are having a great season.

let us not forget that this was also CSU's fourth game in five days. they stuck it out in the fourth (like all top tier teams encounter in that situation) and earned the win. im sure many others like me will be paying closer attention to thursday's results.

It was a great win for CSU. I am never a big fan about celebrating a loss, but when a team plays hard and keeps a game close against one of the top teams in the country they do deserve some credit. The UMD Bulldogs, Coach Graff, and his staff deserve props for this game. I have had the pleasure of playing summer league with various UMD players and coaches along with officiating their HS games, and I can tell you that this is a great group of guys.

I love how UMD will travel to play the best teams. It is not easy going on the road and playing the best teams. If we had played the game in Duluth would the result have been different?

CSU up until this season was in the same boat. I cannot remember before this season a top tier team(besides the Cossacks) that travelled to the front range. if you want to talk about teams that travel and seek out the top competition, you have to start with the rams.

We've been to Colorado to play CU and CSU and plan to go back next year. In fact, Michigan went South every year even back in the 70s and 80s and went West to Arizona (where they also played UCSB) as early as 1992.

It's great to see how the MCLA has evolved to include so much interconference play. UMD is showing what it takes to establish your team. Until you are respected as a perennial top 10 team, it takes a lot of travel to get the games you need - especially if you are located somewhere that isn't as sexy to travel to or doesn't have other top teams nearby as a draw.

Most results in sports are not statistically significantly different. When someone wins a 100m dash by 0.01 seconds, they get the gold, but that that really tells you—if you understand statistics and probability—is that the winner raced better in that race, not that he's objectively better than the other runner. If they raced 100 times, due to natural random variation in results you might see one guy win 55 times and the other guy win 45 because that 0.01 margin of victory is smaller than the trial-to-trial variation among world-class sprinters. And certainly the guy who lost by 0.01 seconds should be happier about his performance than the guy who finished 3 seconds back or the guy who didn't finish, even though they all still lost.

All of this applies to team sports as well. Even if you have two teams that are perfectly evenly matched, the rules of the game require that one of the teams win even though neither team is better than the other one.

The reality of sport is that it takes results that are not statistically significantly different and makes them practically significant. And that's fine, because we don't have time to play a 100-game series between two closely-matched teams in order to get a statistically significant result. The problem comes when people such as yourself ignore all other relevant information and look only at who won and lost. Surely you can't believe that losing to a top 5 team by one goal and losing to a top5 team by 35 goals are "the same" because both represent a loss.

It's too bad, but I don't see how Duluth can ever have a home game against top competition(outside the UMLL) due to the nature of weather in Duluth. it sure would be fun to have a Out of Conference game at Griggs Field in the spring with some top comp!!!

UMD (the university, not the team) should put a dome over Griggs Field.

It would be a great place to play, they could certainly generate tons of revenue from local youth and park and rec teams. I don't know if there's another facility anywhere near there.

Figure they could take the dome down for the 2-3 days it's actually nice weather up there

Actually they waived off 2 goals....soph attackmen scott wishart netted a goal if the 3rd that went in the net, came back out, and was called a no goal. Frustrating.
