What is the Top 3?

Postby Timbalaned on Sun Feb 25, 2007 6:08 pm

Want to see what people think the top 3 or 10, or whatever you want to talk about for the next poll will look like? Does CU drop even after beating a tough DIII opponent cause it "shouldn't count" in the polls? Where do Oregon and BYU go? Lots of stuff going on.

I have to go with

BYU
Oregon
Colorado

only cause BYU started higher than Oregon, and I don't really think it matters seeing as they play on Friday.

The Top 3 is actually the easiest part of the poll to deal with right now. I would go with BYU, Oregon, Colorado (and then Michigan) in that order, but the order isn't too important at this stage in the season. It's after those four undefeated squads that things get dicey. Utah's defeat of UCSB today (after dropping two games to the Arizona squads) really throws a wrench in the system and complicates the cluster of rankings from #5 - # 20.

Yet another instance where I'm relieved not to be a poll voter. A few items to ponder: I don't even know which WCLL team will end up ranked highest, but whoever it is, I would imagine it will be the lowest ranking for the WCLL's top team in poll history. On the flip side, UM-Duluth should move up and may end up with the highest ranking ever for a UMLL squad (I don't have any direct knowledge of this but I'm just guessing a UMLL squad has never been ranked higher than #8 or #9).

This is the way I see it....

1 BYU 5-0....Great Wins over four ranked opponents
2 Colorado 0-0, 1-0.....Can't penalize them for not playing any MCLA teams
3 Oregon 6-0....Huge steps for a great program
4 CSU 1-1....Convincing rebound Sunday
5 Michigan 2-0, 3-0...Great Program, will know more from games to come
6-8 UMD 2-0, Sonoma 0-2, Arizona 2-1...Hardest three to differentiate
9 FSU 8-0 undefeated, too many tight games to move up
10 UCSB...5-2 tough weekend in Utah

I think 1-3 is a given, 4 and 5 could go either way, 6-8 it a crap shoot, FSU is still undefeated plays Michigan on the 28th, UCSB took a step back in Utah but its a hard place to play.

Thats the way I see it falling. It was certainly an entertaining weekend across the country from the MCLA to D1. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue all season.

I'd go with either

1 (tie) BYU
1 (tie) Colorado
3 Oregon

or

1 BYU
2 Colorado
3 Oregon

Oregon had a GREAT win against CSU and should move up (duh), but being at home I think a jump from 8 to 3 is sufficient.

BYU has done well and should move up at least one notch with CSU falling.

Colorado either stays at 2 or ties for 1 because (as mentioned earlier) you can't penalize a team for playing only 1 game-and not loosing. And secondly, Colorado College is a very good team and that's a HUGE win for Colorado. CC won't make an appearance in the Div III championship any time soon but they're good enough that when a top end MCLA team beats them it should be considered a bit of an upset.

I think this logic is flawed. Instead of looking at it as punishing CU, we should be looking at it as rewarding Oregon. Just because CU didn't have any MCLA games doesn't mean teams ranked below them shouldn't have the opportunity to move up in the polls.
