Schott Fired

Postby DanGenck on Mon Feb 12, 2007 10:01 pm

I cannot believe that Marty goes 14-2 and loses in the play-offs and he gets fired. What happened to job security?

What a bunch of garbage!

The article was pretty revealing though - he had lost pretty much the entire coaching staff, and didn't get along with his boss. The playoff loss was very bitter as well -EVERYONE had them going to, and winning the Super Bowl - so expectations were very high. His playoff record sucks.
All that being said - someone will end up with a pretty good coach, and Marty will have 3 million ways to ease the pain of the indignity of another firing.

Marty was not let go for his record, it was his relationship with Management and Owners....

The Chargers front-office tension built over the past few weeks, sources said, as A.J. Smith and Dean Spanos disagreed with Marty Schottenheimer's decision to allow linebackers coach Greg Manusky, tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski and assistant strength and conditioning coach Matt Schiotz to interview elsewhere. All three eventually took other jobs. But, according to sources, the final straw occurred yesterday when Schottenheimer wanted to interview his brother Kurt for the defensive coordinator position. Spanos and Smith did not approve, but Schottenheimer held firm in asserting that he had the right to hire his own staff.

In otherwords...dont try to hire your family to coach with you in the NFL

if they knew they were going to fire him, they should have done it earlier and offered wade phillips the job before he left for dallas. phillips made that defense what it was, and the chargers are stuck without a majority of the coaching staff. although they do have A LOT of talent on both sides of the ball, so whoever takes over in SD, they will have plenty to work with.

Maybe they didn't want phillips, and once they knew he was gone pulled the trigger?

Marty had a great regular season. . .but the way he handled the big decisions in that playoff game were laughable. When he opted not to kick a field goal from about 48 yards with a kicker that hadn't missed at home all season. . .in a scoreless game? Idiot. I would have fired him at halftime. He may have a lot of wins, but if I want to win a Super Bowl, he's not my guy.

I understand the Marty supporters. . .Do you blame a coach when your DB intercepts a ball on 4th and 10 and then fumbles away the game? Maybe it's not fair, but losing can be a disease. . .and Marty has been contagious for years.

He deserved to be fired. . .but the timing makes no sense. . . just another stupid Spanos maneuver. . .

Wade wouldnt have lasted too long since he just hired his son from Baylor's staff to be a quality control coach for the Cowboys. that doesnt fly with the Chargers.

I'm hearing so many names. any Chargers fans with predictions? These are the names:
June Jones and Jerry Glanville, Hawaii
Mike Singeltary and Norv Turner, 49ers
Mike Zimmer, Falcons
Jim Mora, former Falcons
Ron Rivera, Bears
Rex Ryan, Eagles
Bill Parcells, former Cowboys (please hire him so my Cowboys can get the draft pick compensation)
Gary Gibbs, Saints
Pete Carroll, USC
peace.

i think everyone out there would like to see Singletary on the sidelines...a good guy, but more importantly - the owners should force him to wear his glasses from the 80's on the sidelines....

looking for a picture...

I think I know what you have in mind about Mike Singletary with his bulging eyes when playing his linebacker position. He was such a hardnosed defender.

And IIRC, Ron Rivera backed him up at MLB.
