Final score: Sonoma 11 - Santa Clara 4.
The score does not tell the story of this game, however. Santa Clara dominated the play in the offensive end for most of the first half. They lost 2 first half goals, one to a stick check and one for a crease violation. Sonoma scored 2 goals late in the 2nd quarter for a 2-1 lead at the half. Santa Clara held a 3-2 lead with 5:30 left in the 3rd, capitalizing with 2 goals on a Sonoma unreleasable due to a stick violation. Sonoma pulled to a 4-3 lead at the end of three quarters as they took over control of the game and rattled off 8 unanwered goals as Santa Clara seemed to run out of gas. Sonoma's AA goalie Warren Pringle left the game in the 1st half due to what looked like a hand or thumb injury. Sonoma's backup goalie played well when pressed into action without any warmup. Although his ending stats won't show it, Santa Clara's goalie, Phil Donnici, played an excellent game and made some great saves on point blank shots especially in the 1st half to keep his team in the game.

Game report from WCLL.com:
The Mustangs and Wildcats gathered at San Marin HS Saturday to continue the annual battle for the boot. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Wildcats fought back and tied it up at 3 a piece to end the first. In the second Matt Anderson (Jr, Marin Catholic HS) went to work, tallying two assists and one goal to give Cal Poly a 6-3 lead at half. Chico came roaring back, scoring 30 seconds into the third. But the Mustang defense, led by Mark Govan (Jr, Acalanes HS), held firm. Strong performances from FOGO's Reza Kazemini (Sr, Maria Carrillo HS) and Robbie Jordan (Jr, Amador Valley HS) secured possession for most of the fourth, allowing the Mustang's offense to tire the talented Chico defense. Freshman Devin Mateo (Fr, Bishop O'Dowd) scored late in the fourth to complete the hat trick. The Mustang's man up (3-4) and man down units, coupled with the attack's relentless ride, proved to be the difference in the end. Special thanks to head coaches Paul Rocchio of Chico State and Marty of San Marin HS for making this event possible.

ya i saw it....it was neutral, with the exception of a few recent chico alum shouting some obscenities, the crowd was 50/50 with regard to parents from what i could see. the wcll report was pretty accurate. the first 2 goals of the game by poly can be faulted by first game jitters, or bad weather, but mainly the fault of defensemen #25 from chico. chico's clearing struggled severely mostly due to bad passing and middies running into double and tripple teams. during the small amount of time that chico had the ball on settled offense, they found it difficult to maintain possession. #11 from chico had a good game, racking up a few. chico's defense played solid throughout, but its hard not to let up goals when you play defense the majority of the game......they looked impressive to me. chico's new goalie played well...with the exception of one goal he should have stopped, and one let in due a slip on the wet plastic turf, the keep made some ridiculous 1x1 saves and some in traffic. poly played a very disciplined game and have some very good talent. their strength resides in their midfield, unless they chose not to show off their attack....their drives all started with middies. #12 #11 and #6 performed well and initiated a lot. they are, however very predictable...they run a 231 and look for all the basic looks and they ran a 24 and tried to get a middie on middie matchup and draw the slide and hit cutters. honestly i think they are capable of playing much better. good game and i think that weather and venue had a lot to do with the outcome but poly deserves the W. well played

Compliments to Chico and Cal Poly for making the extra effort to find a venue and pulling off the game. I know that Chico wasn't planning to travel that far for a "home" game. Good stuff!!
