Lacrosse Clip Art/Stock Photography?

Postby LaxRef on Fri Feb 09, 2007 8:13 pm

Does anyone know a good source for lacrosse clip art and/or stock photography? Free is nice, but I can pay for a package if it's decent and not too expensive. I found a few things online, but I'm not paying $100 for one picture.

Clip art and photos of officials, whistles, flags, zebras, etc., would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Althought it's all of the same two teams, we had a professional photographer come out to our season opener last season. If any are helpful, feel free to use them.

Here's one that specifically includes the men in stripes:

I was going to help you out by looking on the web for lacrosse pictures, so I used the Google and searched on things like sticks and poles, but the sites that were returned didn't seem to be the type you are looking for! (Or maybe they are!  )

Lax.com perhaps? They have tons of photos on there, I'm sure if you really look you can find ones for what you need. Also, excuse me for stating the obvious, but the photos section of this very site has a veritable treasure trove of photos as well.

That can't be used unless you have expressed written permission from the web site and photographer. Do you understand basic copyright law applies to the web too?

I realize that, but I was making the assumption that since it's LaxRef, he would be using them for some sort of non-commercial/profit, educational use; in which case I would hope most photographers with their work on here would not object to, especially considering the images are already on the web for free to begin with.

Just because something is on the web for free does not mean that you can use them without permission.

I realize that. What I was saying was that if something is on the web for free, especially something like sports photography where the original doesn't have a whole lot of value inherent of itself, there is much less motivation for whoever created the work to say no to someone using the work, assuming they (the user) are not making money off of the usage.

I do understand copyright law, even though I'm not a big believer in it. Either way, debating this will just take this thread even further off topic.

I would imagine that any public use of E-Lacrosse graphics/cursors/etc. would also need to be approved by their site management.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but wouldn't the fact that it is available for free download be tacit approval of private use?

Yes. And that is the way most free downloads on the web are structured.

However, it sounds like LaxRef is asking about artwork that he can use publicly (which is way different than private use).

you know it never hurts to ask the people you are borrowing photos or graphics from. In many cases they will send you better quality stuff that you can use. This gives the owner/artist control over how their work is depicted publicly. So they might not have a problem with you using it for free, and it only takes 5 minutes to send off a quick email asking them. When I did the webpage for my team a couple of years ago I sent an email to the US Lacrosse web guy for a graphic to link to their page and asked if that was allowed. He gladly sent me a nice graphic formatted for the web. I got the impression he was a little miffed that people just pull these graphics off their main page without permission.
