Michigan Football Recruiting

Postby bste_lax on Sat Feb 03, 2007 11:17 pm

I am sure JP can chime in on this but I somewhat follow Big Ten Football recruiting since I am a psycho Iowa Football fan but I couldn't believe that Michigan has a chance to be shut out on the Top 9 instate recruits (based on Rivals' rankings) this year.

It's not like they weren't good this past year or that the talent is down this year. Most of the guys have picked Oklahoma, LSU, Georgia Tech, and one kid going to Michigan State.

It just seemed weird to me Lloyd Carr couldn't seal the deal with instate kids.

I am pretty happy he couldn't seal the deal with the #1 recruit in the state.

Iowa got a surprise with the #8 or #9 rated player in the state of Michigan signed his LOI to play at Iowa when everyone thought he was going to Michigan State (this is after he was supposed to go to Georgia Tech).

anyone else surprised that Illinois, who won only 2 games last year, got the best recruiting class out of the entire Big 10?

Not totally, Zook is a great recruiter. He just can't coach.

Story at Georgia Tech was that said player didn't want to take a 2nd year of a foreigh language which is required for admission to Georgia Tech. He was told about the requirement numerous times and that he would have to schedule a 2nd year of Spanish during his senior season. He failed to do so and GT pulled their scholarship offer.

Don't know if that same requirement exists for admission to Iowa or Mich State.

By the way, his father sounds like a real nut case. Good luck to the Hawkeyes and that forthcoming "drama."

I'd be most interested to hear your background proof for this statement.

Wasn't this past season of UF seniors Spurrier's last group he talked to?

Don't really understand what your trying to say. If you mean that this Florida team is the result of Spurrier's recruiting, most agree it's not:

At Florida, meanwhile, it's a clean, fresh slate. Three years and 14 losses of bickering whether Ron Zook was the rightful successor to Stevie Wonder or just a cruel joke played on Gator nation by Jeremy Foley have ended. Zook's out and resettled in Illinois where he'll probably prove to be a very good head ball coach. In his place is Meyer, young, dynamic and just the infusion of feel good energy for Foley to regain the trust of a Gator nation that senses something very good is about to happen.

Meyer has inherited from Zook a talent base that is equal to or superior to either of his big three rivals.

spurrier never really recruited, just kinda worked with whatever his assistants could get him.

zook is an amazing recruiter. this year's seniors (everyone but the freshman) were his recruits.

Michigan also got the top player in Texas, a 6'7" QB from Texarkana that Mack Brown was really after. he's supposed to be already enrolled and taking classes.
peace.

Yeah, I heard the whole deal about the foreign language and thought it was stupid that he knew this already yet the kid didn't take any this year in high school considering he "loved" Georgia Tech. I am also aware his dad is a nut case, his dad denied that they even visited Iowa multiple times even though it is confirmed they did. It should be interesting to how he pans out......we don't get many "big star" DB recruits and Iowa somehow grabbed three 4-stars DBs (since stars mean "everything") in this class, so our fan base is a little happy about that.

As for Zook, his record speaks for himself. He can get some of the best talent in the world but he doesn't produce with it. Also, shouldn't a good coach know he is going aganist a Lou Groza winner kicker in a bowl game and not call him a running back multiple times (he did this with Nate Kaeding). Way to be on top of things coach.

Here is his latest quote on why he chose Iowa.

"Iowa was the place I always really wanted to go to," Everson said on Wednesday night. "My heart was really set on Iowa. With all of the stuff that happened with Georgia Tech, I wanted to visit Iowa and when I got there I had friends there like Anthony Bowman and my cousin, Dominique Douglas, also goes there, so I felt comfortable."
