"Devices in place for weeks

Turner said the devices have been in place for two or three weeks in Boston; New York City; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Austin, Texas; San Francisco, California; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania."

So Sonny and Grey Bear, you are arguing, that all of these cities neglected their duty to protect their citizens?

I live in Atlanta (home of Turner Broadcasting), do extensive travel for business on a weekly basis through the city, and I have never seen the devices.

I'm not in public safety, but I'm fairly certain that they have a written Emergency Response Plan they must follow. I'm sure the folks in Boston were following their written orders to protect their citizens. It's far easier to play Monday Morning Quarterback after the items were deemed harmless.

I agree that they acted appropriatly for the first one at most two, but once they figured it all out why didn't they turn down crazy? And not use the media to further the fear?

All I know is...if that Inignot can cause that much chaos being the lackey....

We're all in some serious trouble with Err shows up!

In a news conference, Rich told reporters he had advised his clients not to discuss the incident. Stevens and Berdovsky took the podium and said they were taking questions only about haircuts in the 1970s.

When a reporter accused them of not taking the situation seriously, Stevens responded, "We're taking it very seriously." Asked another question about the case, Stevens reiterated they were answering questions only about hair and accused the reporter of not taking him and Berdovsky seriously.

Reporters did not relent and as they continued, Berdovsky disregarded their queries, saying, "That's not a hair question. I'm sorry."

HAHAHA...they're acting as ridiculous as charges they'll face are.

I wonder if Spaghetti Junction will be shut down for 37 years to investigate all of the "plastic explosive-like" devices that Atlanta has deposited when their gum loses it's flavor and they toss it on the road...and don't even get me started on cigarette butts and their likeness to Anthrax since they're both white. This will cost Atlanta an estimated eleventy gazillion dollars and completely cripple democracy...causing us to bomb North Carolina because there are some tobacco farms there...and the Wrigley's factory in Gainesville, Ga.

Despicable "Guerilla" marketing campaign!!! I can't even eat my freedom fries in peace without getting paranoid.

If the Boston folks were just following procedure, then the procedure needs some work.

The two guys who placed the ads/Devices have fun at court

Needless to say they seem to be having fun with the overkill.

Please people, his name is Ignignokt. Misspelling his name belittles the name of his moon...which is, the moon. He would never misspell your name, because Mooninites are excellent spellers.

We wouldn't want to belittle someone who's civilization has advanced beyond anything we could possibly comprehend with 100% of our brain. And he can jump really high.

It's sad, I've got that entire episode nearly memorized.

I don't think you answered my question.

Did the other cities fail to protect their citizens?

If the Boston folks were just following procedure, then the procedure needs some work.

Few factual errors I've come across in catching up on this thread.

1) Not all the "devices" have been there for 2-3 weeks. Some, including the one put under the I-93 double decker bridge, were only recently put there.
2) I don't know for sure, but in my long commute to work yesterday, I never heard a press conference where the Boston Police or the mayor or the Attorney General or anyone else of authority say the devices were IEDs. I assume this came about from second-hand information. So to say the city caused the chaos is incorrect.
3) I am extremely pleased with the way the Boston Police, especially the bomb squad, reacted. It's a bit reassuring to know they are going to follow their plans when something like this (false alarm or not) happens.
4) You joke around saying terrorists never would use something like this to place a bomb. Why not? Obviously there are a lot of people on this board alone that wouldn't give it a second look. What BETTER way to disguise a bomb then make it look like something that's not out of place. We're always told to be on the lookout for suspicious activity. To many people here, those are not suspicious so no one is going to give it a second thought.
5) Finally, I want to commend the person who said something along the lines of "if this really were a bomb and it went off because the police assumed it nothing, you would be angry at the government." As Sonny said, you're all playing Monday night quarterback. If this turned out to be a bomb, the City of Boston would be heralded with praise right now.

Really Sonny-- turn off Fox News and quit taking Evil Mr. Burns...er Cheney's word on everything like it's gospel; you will feel much better.

I spent years overseas where bankers and other civilians were blown up by bombs attached to bicycles and I was never paranoid in the slightest. Though I am frightened by the thought of hitting the toll both of GA400 without correct change. Those women can hold you up at ruch hour thereby causing a widespread panic.

Update from Boston.com:

NEWS UPDATE: Friends of the local artist Peter Berdovsky, who was charged in Wednesday's bomb scares, said he was warned by an executive at a New York guerrilla marketing firm as early as 1:25 p.m. that day that their advertising campaign had incited panic in Boston.

Berdovsky sent an e-mail to friends saying that he had been told to keep quiet while police scrambled across the metropolitan area responded to a series of reports of suspicious devices, according to a copy of the e-mail provided to the [Boston] Globe. --Developing

And I will admit this is pretty funny: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/31/aq ... r_for.html

How did a hanging lite bright with an cartoon alien flipping a bird be an attempt to "not look out of place"...that's about as out of place as it gets IMHO.

I dont question/mind the tactical reponse to the situation of something that possibly could be a bomb on a bridge/tunnel. I do question/mind the city of Boston officials saying that the bomb is a symbol of "corporate greed" and comparing it to terrorism. Aren't those things in America supposed to be different?

The evil, white opressing corporation bombing countries and stomping babies CANNOT be compared to the evil, dark opression group bombing countries and stomping babies.

You can't assume that any unexplained piece of crap you find on the street might be a bomb.

Al Qaeda is laughing at us.

I agree. But we're talking about the support structure of the most heavily driven highway through the city, the side of Fenway Park, on the BU bridge, etc... not just on the side of the street.

Anyways, Turner is promising to pay full restitution. I am happy with that. I think the two idiots who put all these up should have the charges dropped but just have to pay a fine. If it weren't for there complete disrespect towards the court that they showed, I wouldn't even have said that much. Other than that, we should put this all behind us and make sure everyone learns a lesson from this.
